Digital platforms have radically transformed the way we listen to music. Never before had we had access to such an extensive catalog of songs, artists, and styles, but this apparent abundance hides a paradox: even though we have countless proposals at the reach of a click, music consumption is increasingly concentrated on a small part of the content.
According to Alpha Data, 1% of artists account for nearly 90% of global streaming plays. In this context, the question is inevitable: does what we listen to really reflect all the music that exists? Or, rather, what algorithms and visibility dynamics show us most frequently?
It is precisely in this scenario that M煤sicaKm0.cat makes sense, an initiative promoted by the Association of Phonographic and Videographic Producers and Publishers of Catalonia (APECAT), with the support of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises (ICEC). The project aims to generate new spaces for discovery, context, and prescription surrounding the music produced from Catalonia's creative ecosystem, connecting artists, producers, record labels, studios, and publishers.
The initiative highlights the importance of curation and editorial criteria in a digital ecosystem marked by an oversupply of content and increasingly rapid forms of consumption. In this context, who helps us find what we do not yet know? How can we reach proposals that remain outside the most visible circuits?
M煤sicaKm0.cat answers these questions by grouping playlists linked to genres as diverse as jazz, folk, singer-songwriter, pop, electronic, urban music, or sound experimentation. The goal is to reflect the real plurality of musical creation in Catalonia and facilitate a more open and inclusive navigation through this diversity.
The results show a growing interest in this model of musical discovery. So far, the project has accumulated more than 63 million digital impressions and has surpassed 42,000 followers through its playlists. Beyond the numbers, however, the initiative champions an underlying idea: the music produced in Catalonia is much more diverse, rich, and complex than what our listening habits often reflect.
