Moving forward together in the comprehensive education of children and young people
Today, education becomes a shared mission between families and schools to prepare children and young people for an uncertain future with values, meaning, and commitment.
The education of children and young people has always been a challenge for humanity. Our ancestors ensured that the youngest members of the family acquired the necessary level of instruction to be useful to the clan, as well as the appropriate level of autonomy to protect themselves, protect others, and contribute to the group. Much time has passed since then, and history has taught us that there have been dark periods in which the upbringing and education of children has not been—let's say—ethically just.
Educating in times of uncertainty: a shared challenge
Today, the heirs of a history and tradition thousands of years old face entirely unknown challenges, social, technological, and even cultural. Humanity is currently experiencing one of the most uncertain periods it has faced since the dawn of time. And in this context of insecurity, volatility, and moral questioning, we ask ourselves what the model of child-rearing and education should be. What kind of future should we prepare them for? Where should we focus our efforts so they acquire the necessary autonomy to thrive and be happy in this unknown future toward which we are heading? These are questions we cannot answer with complete certainty. But this, which has been very well defined by sociologists and relevant scholars, should not hinder our educational work. A well-rounded education cannot be uniform or static. It needs to be dynamic and connected to the changing reality that surrounds us, and capable of adapting to the needs of each student. This implies listening to them, observing them, and understanding that each one develops at their own pace and has unique concerns. Meaningful learning sparks interest and becomes a tool for empowerment. Therefore, schools must create safe and stimulating environments where children and young people can develop their potential freely and responsibly.
The educational community as a driver of change
Whatever challenges the future holds for our children and young people, the role we adults must play as they accompany them on this journey must be clear and well-defined. Families and schools must work together to act in a unified, committed, and responsible manner, supporting them along the path they must travel, working together to help them build a solid ethical foundation, filled with values, that will serve as a basis for facing whatever challenges they will encounter in their lives. Schools cannot and should not be isolated. They are key players in the community and, as such, must promote the active participation and social commitment of all members of their community. Building a better world begins in the classroom, but it expands when what is learned is put at the service of others. Through solidarity projects, collaborative activities, and real-world experiences involving families, teachers, and students, education becomes an engine of social transformation.
Families and schools face humanity's greatest challenge: to move forward together in the holistic education of our children and young people!
