Tibidabo offers a new panoramic view of Barcelona for its 125th anniversary
An installation by the architect Josep Miàs will be set up at the viewpoint.
BarcelonaThis year marks the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Tibidabo Amusement Park, a project born from the desire to bring the mountains closer to the public. To celebrate this anniversary of the dream conceived by Dr. Salvador Andreu and other prominent figures from Barcelona, the park has planned a season full of events and activities. The program kicks off this Saturday, February 28th, with the presentation of one of the gifts Tibidabo will offer a new panoramic view of the Catalan capital.
Taking advantage of Tibidabo's privileged vantage point, the park has installed a work by the MIAS Arquitectes studio – led by Josep Miàs – at the Panoramic Area viewpoint, which will make the city views "even more memorable." It consists of nine letters that form the word BarcelonaConstructed of steel and with their own lighting, they incorporate elements that function as benches to encourage interaction among visitors. Their location promises to make them one of the most sought-after photo opportunities.skyline of the city.
In a press conference, Miàs explained that some of the letters that will form the word Barcelona Some will be touching the ground, others won't, and still others will be suspended in the air, flying over the city. "We could have written Barcelona "We've done it in a conventional way, but we've tried to make each letter represent a characteristic of the city," he said. Since it's located in the plaza just before the entrance, this viewpoint can also be visited on days when the park is closed.
The installation of the viewpoint is one of the highlights of a season that will also feature the opening of a new restaurant in the park in June. Located in the historic Masía building in Tibidabo Square, the restaurant will offer the new culinary creations of chef Rafa Zafra. Park director Rosa Ortiz announced that it will be a "top-notch" restaurant but with a "very affordable price," as it will have a menu designed for families visiting the park to fully enjoy. Among the key features of this new season is the return of the light and music show that brings summer nights to a close, as well as the premiere of a new 4D film to be shown at Dibidabo, the park's cinema. The 12-minute film, suitable for all audiences, will be titled Colors and tells the story of the park's mascots – Ti, Bi, Da, and Bo – on their mission to restore Barcelona's colors.
The second oldest park in Europe
For October, the month marking the 125th anniversary of the park's inauguration, a central commemorative event has been planned, beginning with a public walk. The walk will depart from the Jardinets de Gràcia and proceed to Plaça del Doctor Andreu, where participants can board the Cuca de Llum (light-shaped bus) to reach the park. First Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet and the Director General of Barcelona Municipal Services (BSM), Marta Labata, both emphasized that the park is a project with "a bright future" but deeply connected to its history. In fact, over these 125 years, the park has constantly evolved. Between the first attraction—the Brujas Brujas miniature train—and the latest—the freefall ride of the Marline– there have been many, some of them iconic to the city and still in operation today, such as the Aerial Railway –opened in 1915–, the airplane –which will celebrate its own centenary in 2028–, and the Automata Museum. Tibidabo is the second oldest operating amusement park in Europe after Tivoli in Copenhagen.
