Three seriously injured in a fire that burns down a recycling plant in Caldes de Montbui
The fire has forced the closure of the C-59 road.
BarcelonaAt least three workers were seriously injured in a fire at a recycling plant in the La Borda industrial park in Caldes de Montbui. The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. A series of explosions, heard from the town, sparked a fire that quickly spread throughout the factory. The Catalan Fire Service (Bombers de la Generalitat) explained that the burning building is completely engulfed. They are working to extinguish the blaze by pouring water on the structure and have also removed pallets and materials because the fire threatened to spread to adjacent buildings. The injured, as confirmed on Catalunya Ràdio by the mayor of Caldes de Montbui, Isidre Pineda, are three workers who were inside the factory at the time of the accident. All three were transported by the Medical Emergency Service (SEM) to Vall d'Hebron Hospital. The fire affects the company Tratamiento de Subproductos Industriales, which specializes in recycling.
The mayor also explained that the flames are now considered stabilized. Currently, 17 fire crews are working in the area to prevent the fire from spreading to other factories, along with eight SEM (Emergency Medical Service) units and a medical helicopter. The 112 emergency hotline has received 80 calls, and Civil Protection has activated the Procicat pre-alert for this industrial fire. Road closures are in effect.
The Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) are also in the area with five units and are directing traffic on the C-59. The police force recommends staying away from the affected area and asks people to follow the instructions of the emergency services. Pineda said that, if the Fire Department indicates it is necessary, they will proceed with a possible lockdown of the municipality, but "as of today it has not been necessary."
