BarcelonaThe poor results in the scientific mathematics exam of the PAU continue to keep the Government busy. After the average grade for this subject was 4.18 –the lowest in twelve years– and a certain controversy arose around the test, now the Department of Research and Universities has asked 15 experts to produce a comparative report on the test. As the minister, Núria Montserrat, has announced, the department has made this request to several professionals "to take measures" in the mathematics exam, "but also in all subjects".

According to what ARA has learned, some of the experts received the assignment several days ago and have already submitted their report. Among the requests the Government has made to them is to carry out a comparison between the ordinary mathematics test, the exams from other years, the exam taken by students who had to take the test on another day due to some incident, and the mathematics tests taken by other autonomous communities in the PAU.

Despite this request from the Government, the minister insisted that "mathematics has always been a challenge in Catalonia and in other communities" and recalled that in almost 40 years of university entrance exams in Catalonia, the average for this subject has been below 5 on three occasions. Furthermore, she insisted that even though this year the average grade has been a fail, 4.18 falls within the average of the results for mathematics in recent years in the PAU.

Montserrat also explained that a survey has been conducted among the examiners of all subjects and that the majority have given a grade of over eight for the suitability of the PAU exams with what is stipulated in the baccalaureate curriculum.
