The Generalitat assumes the administration of the Cellex and Mir Puig scientific foundations

A Barcelona court has issued the precautionary measure within a criminal proceeding opened against the two entities created by chemist Pere Mir Puig.

BarcelonaThe Department of Justice has taken over, by court order and "immediately", the judicial administration of the private foundations Cellex and Mir Puig and their four associated commercial companies, whose directors have been dismissed by a judge in Barcelona. As explained by the Department of Justice in a statement last Monday, the Barcelona court of Law and Legal Entities to take charge of the judicial administration of Cellex, dedicated to the healthcare field, and Mir Puig, of assistance support for people who need help to alleviate illnesses

According to the Catalan News Agency (ACN), in 2023, years after Mir's death, the Department of Justice opened an investigation into Cellex to determine whether the assets accumulated during the Catalan chemist and businessman's lifetime had gone to its entirety, Mir's legacy of €400 million, while others reduced the inheritance to €40.

Sources from the Department of Justice clarify that the Generalitat "has done what the judge requested and has made itself available to the court." They also confirm that "it has been judicially detected that there are operations."

Fundamental role in Catalan science

Mir created the private foundation Cellex in 2002, and the entity has since funded projects such as the Institute of Photonic Sciences, the Biomedical Research Center of the University of Barcelona (UB), the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (Idibaps), Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology or the CIMs+Cellex scholarship program for high school students specializing in science and mathematics.
