Teaching competitions: Education will offer a thousand places in March

BarcelonaA new opportunity for temporary teachers in Catalan schools to secure permanent positions. As ARA has learned, this Tuesday morning the Government informed the education unions that make up the sectoral committee that a new competitive examination will be opened in March with a thousand vacancies.

Specifically, this new regular competitive examination will offer 1,100 positions, of which the vast majority (1,089) will correspond to those that have been established as required to meet the replacement rate; that is, positions for teachers who have retired, resigned, or have had to take full leave and therefore must be refilled. Furthermore, eleven positions for the teaching staff of fine arts and design will also be available in the March competitive examinations.

As for the thousand replacement rate places, the bulk of the offer – which the Ministry of Education insists is still provisional and that some figures may be subject to small variations – will be for secondary school teachers (1,033), followed by specialist teachers in specific sectors of vocational training (34), workshops, and fine arts and design (4).

However, according to the information that the Department of Education has provided to the unions at the table this Tuesday, no places are expected to be offered for primary school teachers in next year's competitive examinations. "We regret that again this year there are few competitive examinations on offer and that, furthermore, no competitive examinations are being offered for the teaching staff," criticized USTEC spokesperson Iolanda Segura.

Despite not opening up vacancies for the teaching staff, the offer of 1,100 places for next year's competitive examinations is much higher than the last call, in which Only 495 places were offered, and all of them for the secondary school corpsIn this regard, it should be noted that in recent years there have been significant teacher stabilization processes in the Catalan education system. For example, up to 9,000 places were opened in the teaching competitions in 2023.

Maths, the specialty with the most places

Regarding the places offered for each specialty, Educació reiterates that the data is provisional, but has informed the unions that the forecast is that the largest number of places will be for mathematics teachers (182), followed by Catalan language and literature teachers (147) and Spanish language and literature teachers (114). There will also be a significant proportion of the places offered for the specialties of physics and chemistry (70), health and care procedures (70), computer systems and applications (60) and English (63).
