Eight injured in an explosion at the metro works in Plaça de Sants

Among them, two are in serious condition. Nine fire crews and eight ambulances were transferred to the scene of the accident. According to municipal sources, this same afternoon at 2:40 p.m. there was a gas leak in the accessibility works of the L5 metro line in Plaça de Sants. The leak occurred when a gas pipe was affected during the work on these operations. At that time there was no fire, but hours later, at 10:50 p.m., flames ignited, affecting at least eight people. In fact, it would have been while the tasks to repair the gas pipeline were being carried out when a deflagration occurred a few minutes before eleven at night.

The SEM has sent eight ambulances to attend to those affected by the incident, eight men. Two were seriously injured and have been transferred to Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. At this same center, two more affected individuals were also transferred, in their case in less serious condition. Another injured person in less serious condition has been admitted to the Hospital Clínic, where three minor affected individuals were also treated.
Municipal sources state that from the very first moment the gas leak occurred, safety protocols were activated and nine units from the Barcelona Fire Department were dispatched. Personnel from the gas supply company also went to the leak site to control the incident. As a preventive measure, traffic was cut off and the area was secured.
The Barcelona Fire Department continues to work to extinguish the fire resulting from the explosion and ensure the safety of the surrounding area. The Barcelona Urban Guard has established a security perimeter.

At midnight, emergency teams continue to work in the area, and the reasons for the gas leak and its direct relationship with the fire that is still burning in Plaça de Sants are unknown.
