A fire forces the evacuation of one of the IRTA buildings at the UAB
The fire began outside the facilities and spread inside the building's laboratories
The Generalitat Firefighters are working on extinguishing a fire affecting one of the research buildings of IRTA at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in Cerdanyola del Vallès. The firefighters received the alert at 3:22 PM and the building has already been evacuated. According to initial information, the fire started in a small house attached to the exterior and spread to the interior of the laboratories without leaving any injured people. In fact, the building's workers self-evacuated when the fire started and were already outside the facilities when the firefighters arrived.
15 Firefighter units have been deployed to try to extinguish the fire, which is still active, although the emergency services have explained that the extinction tasks are progressing favorably. According to sources present at the scene, the column of black smoke that was initially visible from several points has now dissipated.
The firefighters' team has divided the work into three sectors. On the one hand, the interior of the main laboratory building. Secondly, the interior of one of the adjacent hangars, which contains straw and has completely burned. Finally, they are monitoring secondary hotspots that could spread to the forest mass very close to the research center.
