BarcelonaThe climber who was in critical condition after being hit by several stones on Saturday while on a route in Montserrat has died this Tuesday at Bellvitge Hospital, as reported by La Vanguardia and confirmed by the ACN. The deceased was accompanied by a man, both 30 years old, who died the day after the accident at Vall d'Hebron Hospital. The Montserrat Mountain Patronage has preemptively closed five climbing routes in the Columpi sector after the fatal accident, as there is an accumulation of stones in the area with a high risk of falling.

Last Saturday, the Generalitat Firefighters received a call at 4:30 p.m. from a person who found the man and woman unconscious near the climbing route, which is close to the Can Jorba parking lot. The woman was the first to be evacuated with serious injuries and was taken to Bellvitge Hospital. The man received initial assistance at the scene because he was suffering from cardiac arrest, which was successfully revived, and was subsequently transferred to Vall d'Hebron by helicopter. In the end, however, healthcare professionals could do nothing to save their lives.

The manager of the Montserrat Mountain Patronage, Xavier Aparicio, stated that they have preemptively closed five climbing routes after the inspection carried out by the Mountain Intervention Unit of the Mossos d'Esquadra, which revealed that on these routes there is an "accumulation of stones" with a high risk of falling. In parallel, and also following the authorities' indications, the Patronage will begin the work to uninstall the climbing equipment from these points.
