Two seriously injured when a bus overturned on the C-32 in Santa Susanna
There were about sixty people in the vehicle, most of whom suffered minor injuries and got out on their own.
BarcelonaA coach overturned this Sunday at noon on the C-32 highway near Santa Susanna, in the Maresme region, leaving 53 people injured. Two of them, in serious condition, were taken to the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital in Badalona, and another, in less serious condition, was taken to the Mataró Hospital. The vehicle was carrying around 60 people at the time of the accident, when it left the road and fell down a slope covered in vegetation. Thanks to this, most of the passengers escaped the accident unharmed and got out of the vehicle on their own. After being discharged, the uninjured passengers continued their journey using alternative means of transport.
"The curve was to the left, he continued straight to the right and fell down a slope covered in vegetation, fortunately, because we think this cushioned the fall a little. He then dropped about 30 meters and overturned sideways," explained Pep Colàs, the Bomb response chief. They received notification of the accident at 12:22 p.m. at kilometer 127.7 of the C-32, heading towards Barcelona. A total of fourteen firefighter units, eight ambulances from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), two medical helicopters, and a joint team from both agencies were mobilized to the scene to assist those affected. In total, healthcare professionals treated 53 people.
Apart from the most serious injuries, one person was slightly injured and taken to Mataró Hospital and another five were slightly injured at Calella Hospital. The rest of the people affected by the accident have been discharged and taken to the Can Xaubet ward in Pineda de Mar. After receiving treatment, the transport company that owned the crashed coach, Moventis, sent another vehicle to continue the route with the passengers who were not injured. The crashed coach was a regular line that made the journey between Lloret de Mar and El Prat Airport, with several stops.
An accident at the same point
Emergency services inspected the interior of the overturned coach to verify that no one was trapped inside. Once it was stabilized, firefighters cleaned the area around the coach to rule out any further damage. "We've eliminated the risks that the crashed coach could have posed, ensuring it didn't catch fire or anything else could have happened," Colàs told the media. Regarding the causes of the accident, Carlos Corbacho, the regional operational shift chief of the Metropolitan Northern Police Region of the Mossos d'Esquadra, explained that they are under investigation and no hypothesis has been put forward.
A few meters from this Sunday's accident, another coach accident occurred in July 2024, this time heading north, but Corbacho stressed that "it would not be appropriate" to determine whether the causes are related to this point on the track. The mayor of Santa Susanna, Joan Campolier, also assured that this point on the highway "is not problematic" and that this accident is "very different" from the one a year ago.
Meanwhile, Civil Protection has activated the Procicat pre-alert, and the highway has been completely closed in the direction of Barcelona due to the incident, causing 2 kilometers of traffic jams, until a lane was finally opened to traffic. The 112 hotline has received about fifteen calls regarding this accident.
