A video in which Assumpta Serna denounces Catalonia's dependency system goes viral: "It is neither human nor fair"
The actress has generated enormous controversy with her complaint
Assumpta Serna, one of the most popular and beloved actresses in the country, has generated enormous controversy on social media after denouncing the "hell" that, she says, it means to face Catalonia's dependency system. Serna published a message on Instagram on Saturday denouncing the slowness and ineffectiveness of the Catalan Government's dependency aid system. "It is not humane nor fair," says the actress, who takes care of her mother, who is one hundred years old. Her publication, in which she asks to collect testimonies to "gain more strength" and demand "more budget and trained caregivers," has gone viral.
The video, under the title Frustrada and which has accumulated thousands of views, denounces that what is happening to them "only illustrates how terrible the care for the elderly in Catalonia is at the moment and the incoherent and bureaucratic hell that must be gone through to achieve anything... if you achieve anything at all". Serna says she has filed a formal complaint with the Barcelona Social Services Consortium, after being granted, in July, one year after requesting it, a home care service of 64 hours per month "for a person who needs it 24 hours a day". This delay is added to the years she has been waiting for her mother's dependency level to be reviewed, specifically since 2017. Serna also criticizes that the service closes during the month of August and that it offers no attention by mail or telephone: "It's like saying: 'Would you mind not dying in August?'"
The actress denounces the impossibility of directly hiring a caregiver and receiving a benefit. "They force you to hire companies recommended by the Generalitat that take enormous commissions and with caregivers who do not have the required qualifications". Serna laments the treatment received by "people who have worked all their lives and who now, when they need it most, the system treats them as a burden, always prioritizing other age groups".
After the wide dissemination of her initial video, Serna has published another in which she thanks the citizens' response and states that "a politician" told her he would call her "in September".
