The Opinion of Zamora As confirmed by ARA, around 8 a.m., the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) received a report that a man was assaulting a person lying on the ground on Passeig de Olot, in the Santa Eugenia neighborhood of Girona. Upon seeing the officers arrive, the assailant attempted to flee. When the officers intercepted him, however, the man also assaulted the police, who were eventually able to arrest him on charges of assault and resisting arrest. The Catalan police have opened an investigation to clarify the events. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition with a guarded prognosis at the Trueta Hospital in Girona. According to the city council, the homeless person who was assaulted had been visited by social service organizations and municipal professionals, who had offered him housing alternatives, which he had declined.
The mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, has expressed his "dismay" at the attack. In a statement on X, the mayor stressed that "no violence has a place" in the city and assured that the City Council is working in coordination with all the services involved to "strengthen support for the most vulnerable people."
