The strategies of lawyers to convince popular juries, with judges who are in contact with the courts for the first time, do not only take into account how to choose the profile of the person who suits them best in each case. In large trials, they also have advisors who advise them on which evidence can best support their defense and how to present it to the jury. Sometimes they also surround themselves with investigators who work in parallel with the police so that the defense can anticipate the evidence that will be against the accused. Although the jurists consulted agree that this model is becoming increasingly widespread, it is by no means common and is used in a very small part of judicial proceedings in Catalonia. In large part, because it entails a much higher cost than a defense with a single lawyer, or a free one by appointment. "The defense in a trial works one way if you have money; if not, it works another way," summarizes the specialist in legal and forensic psychology Miquel Àngel Soria.

The big question that the judicial investigation into the death of Isak Andic is trying to answer is whether he fell accidentally or if someone pushed him. The only person with whom he was that day in Collbató was his son, Jonathan Andic, currently the only one investigated for the death of the founder of Mango. The case, however, must also analyze what motivations could lead a son to kill his father. The therapy that Jonathan Andic and Isak Andic were undergoing to improve their father-son relationship is one of the elements at the center of the investigation to try to clarify how the founder of Mango died. In the midst of this therapy was a coach, J.L., who practiced a method inspired by Freud and his metaphorical theory of the death of the father. J.L.'s role is key to the point that the judge is investigating whether she was involved in the businessman's death, and this Tuesday she spent two hours and forty minutes testifying, leaving the courts as a witness and not as a suspect.From J.L.'s therapy, advanced by this newspaper, the messages from Jonathan to Isak such as "I'm not surprised you thought I was capable of killing you" have emerged. Two hours and forty minutes. That's how long the Andic family therapist, J.L., has been answering questions from the judge investigating the death of Mango founder Isak Andic; from the case prosecutor and the defense of Jonathan Andic, who is under investigation for his father's death. The therapist's testimony is key, as the harshest messages from the son to the father – such as "I'm not surprised you thought I was capable of killing you" – were written during their therapy sessions. So much so that the judge in the case asked the Mossos d'Esquadra to investigate if third parties could have been involved in the businessman's death, referring to J.L. For now, however, she entered the Martorell courts on Tuesday morning as a witness and left with the same status. As of now, the judge has decided not to classify her as a suspect.

The death of Isak Andic is not a usual police and judicial investigation. And it is not so because the account of the Mossos, the prosecutor, and the judge of Martorell is built on circumstantial evidence. These indications range from the behavior of his son and sole investigated person, Jonathan Andic, in the days before the events, to the messages between father and son, the contradictions in the investigated person's statements, the analysis of the deceased's autopsy, and also the study of how the fall of the Mango founder occurred and the marks it left on the ground.

They were months of total secrecy. Only a few people within the Mossos d'Esquadra knew that the death of the owner of Mango, Isak Andic, on December 14, 2024, was not being investigated as an accident; that they believed it could be a homicide, and that they suspected his son Jonathan. In fact, they even tapped the phone of the eldest son of the Andics for a season, but the measure did not yield results and the police opted to confiscate his phone. After a few months, on May 19, Jonathan Andic was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of his father's death; an action that only a few in Mossos also knew about in advance.

Dark, confusing, unpredictable, bizarre, violent days, all in all. To a large extent, crime reporting has been exonerated by what we might call conventional or mainstream media from the bad reputation that preceded it. Jonathan Andic has been defending himself since the Mossos d'Esquadra arrested him as the alleged perpetrator of his father's death. Judicially, by filing a technical and extensive appeal that denies the evidence incriminating him to try to have the restrictive measures currently against him lifted, such as the passport withdrawal or the one million euro bail with which he has managed to avoid going to prison. On Informativos Telecinco it caught attention that the news screen was filled with the Mango logo as an easy reference for the audience. They clarified that that recording was one of the main pieces of evidence the defense would use. But the most insidious thing was the way they illustrated the audio recordings. When the lament of “my father has fallen” was heard, they used images of Isak Andic's stumble months before he died. In the same way, when the recording was heard of Jonathan providing the location, they included a family photo in which father and son appeared smiling, taking a quiet summer stroll years before the founder of Mango fell down the ravine. At Telecinco, they also emphasized the expression Jonathan used to call his father: “Old mannnn!” In the Telenotícies migdia of TV3, beyond the context data, they clarified that “it is another chapter of the case in the media battle for the narrative that is being played out” and that the leaked fragments did not reflect Andic's contradictions. Journalistically, it is key to specify this. The audios cause an impact, but they contribute nothing beyond public speculation. It is a case that is being served to us in installments, and we must keep in mind the role the media play and the extent to which they are allowing themselves to be used by interested parties.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has opposed the appeal by which Jonathan Andic requested that the precautionary measures against him be withdrawn in the case in which he is being investigated for allegedly killing his father, Mango founder Isak Andic. Marco, by the way, explained that sooner or later we would also see some images they had recorded of people being thrown from the mountain tied with harnesses to reproduce the fall, and he assured that if we saw them, “our souls would shrink”. The defense of Jonathan Andic has come out in force to compensate for the image of the investigated person entering the Martorell court handcuffed.
