Initial investigations by the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) indicate that the young people did not die from burns, and that the burning mattress was in a different storage room from the one where the young people were found. The police have now concluded their initial investigation and have sent their findings to the court handling the case. Instead of fire, they concluded, they found no accelerant or explosion. The young people were fully clothed and showed no signs of foul play or burns, as confirmed by the autopsies. Emergency services also found no locked doors to gain access to the fire and did not have to force entry. The investigation also confirms that the fire did not cause structural damage to the building. To gather all the necessary information, the Mossos took seven statements, allowing them to study and analyze what happened during the afternoon and up until shortly before the fire. Although these initial steps have been completed, more work remains to be done, and further checks by the investigation unit are also needed.

Investigation teams are working with all hypotheses open, but have concentrated on several rail breaks detected along the stretch of track where the accident occurred. In an interview Monday night on TVE, Transport Minister Óscar Puente admitted that, indeed, "there are pieces of broken rail in several places." "We have detected an initial break, but the crucial question is whether it is the cause or the consequence of the accident," the minister explained. In other words, the teams are now trying to determine whether the rail broke at some point and this caused the derailment, or whether, on the contrary, the train's derailment and the subsequent collision—and the dragging of all the rolling stock—damaged the tracks.

For some people, spending time in a barracks for military training was a way to bring out a supposed virility. All of that is in the past, but the traumatic stories are still remembered: denigrating "rabbits"—new recruits—was a pastime of those of higher rank and veterans, some of whom were driven to these practices if they didn't want to become victims themselves. Following the success of the documentary They'll make you a manMireia Prats and Joan Torrents now showcase the work of eight months of research for a sequel to that piece. They'll Make You a Man: Silenced Deaths It delves into several cases of deaths under strange circumstances that occurred in military barracks, deaths that remain shrouded in doubt because they were never properly investigated. The production premieres this Tuesday on TV3 and on the 3Cat platform.

In Hospitalet de Llobregat, a 77-year-old man died in a fire that broke out last night in his home. Firefighters received the call at 9:55 p.m. The flames completely gutted a room on one of the apartments on the fifth floor of the building, located on Uva Street. It is a six-story building with a ground floor and four apartments per floor. As a result of the fire, eight other people required medical attention from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), and one of them was taken to Bellvitge Hospital in stable condition. Firefighters deployed eight crews—two light coordination and command vehicles, a ladder truck, and three water tankers—to the scene to extinguish the blaze. For its part, the SEM (Emergency Medical Service) activated seven units and a team of psychologists, and the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police) also deployed eight patrols. The municipal architect has carried out a structural assessment of the building, and the City Council's social services have taken charge of the care and relocation of those who have been unable to return to their homes. Shortly after 1:00 a.m., another fire gutted a fourth-floor apartment in a building in Constantí, Tarragona. When firefighters arrived, they found flames "fully engulfed" and "several residents trapped in windows and on the roof." The fire had already burned the entire fourth-floor apartment and had spread up the facade to the roof. During the firefighting efforts, firefighters found a 54-year-old man dead inside the damaged building. Firefighters also evacuated two people from the fifth floor and rescued two other residents from the penthouse terrace using a ladder truck. The rest had remained inside their homes. However, the building has not suffered any structural damage. A third fire affected another apartment, this time in Castelldefels. The fire, which started shortly after 3:00 a.m., engulfed the kitchen of a first-floor apartment, while the rest of the apartment was affected by the heat and smoke, which spread through the stairwell and eventually affected a second-floor apartment. The residents of the ground floor and the people on the second floor have been able to return home, while the Local Police and City Council Social Services have arranged for the temporary accommodation of the family from the damaged apartment, who will not be able to return until the cleanup is completed.

This fact is surprising to tourists given the cleanliness of most streets. He replied, "It doesn't just bother tourists, it bothers the Japanese themselves." The question we should ask, then, is another: why are there so few trash cans in Japan? Japanese means "supreme truth." Five members of the sect spread across three different lines of the Tokyo subway during rush hour in the morning. They inhaled the gas, as it is toxic. The criminals punctured the bags so the gas would spread into the atmosphere. Some of the plastic bags were strategically placed in trash cans. The Japanese government's security policies. But this Monday also started in dramatic fashion: a motorcyclist fell on the C-58, at the entrances to Barcelona, and was subsequently run over by a truck and killed. That means eight deaths on the roads in three days, and there are already 30 fatalities on the country's interurban roads since it began in 2025, 9 of them motorcyclists. The data is shocking: 30% of the deaths of the year have occurred in a single weekend.

According to sources from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the officers lost sight of the vehicle during the escape until they found the crashed car on a secondary road between Vallbona d'Anoia and the Castle of Cabrera (Anoia), next to a wooded area. The bodies of both men, who have not yet been identified, were in a puddle at the bottom of a ravine in the area and where they allegedly fell when they tried to flee on foot after abandoning the crashed vehicle.

Twelve lives cut short every day. Lives of human beings who were only looking for an opportunity far from the misery of their homeland and who, in the final stretch, embarked on a precarious boat, drowned in most cases without receiving help and often in anonymity. We have become accustomed to this terrifying humanitarian drama as if we could do nothing about it, as if it were alien to us, as if it were a distant fatalism. And none of the three things is true: Europe does nothing because it does not consider it a priority or, even worse, it acts politically with hypocrisy and cynicism; no human life should be alien to us, especially not those of people (including 205 small children) who are defenceless and bear great suffering, and accepting that these things simply happen and that the world is like this only causes them to happen more often.

The excess mortality in the region directed Isabel Díaz Ayuso is the highest in the EU alongside Lombardy (39%), the northernmost region of Italy and the first to record coronavirus cases in the EU. This is the conclusion of the annual regional and local barometer published by the European Committee of the Regions in October, which this year is marked by the impact of the pandemic and includes a ranking of the ten areas with the highest excess mortality rates. This indicator has been calculated by comparing the number of deaths recorded in 2020 with the average number of deaths from 2016 to 2019.

And today it happened... And it's terrible," explained a neighbour at number 20 Plaça Tetuan in Barcelona this Tuesday morning, where a fire early this morning claimed the lives of four members of a family: father, mother and two very young children, aged between one and three. They had been living in a former bank office of Evo Banco for more than a year, and the city social services had been monitoring the children since they were alerted, in 2020, that they were living in these squatted premises in poor conditions. Early this morning, for reasons still unknown, the ground floor caught fire and the family was trapped inside.

Vaccination has played a key role in achieving this drop, according to the head of epidemiology at Vall d'Hebron Hospital, Magda Campins, and Biocom researcher Clara Prats. "The over-70s were the group with most deaths; now, thanks to vaccination, almost none of them is admitted to hospital because if they catch covid, most of them are asymptomatic," says the doctor. And she adds: "The weather or restrictions affect all age groups in the same way, but the groups where there is a clearer decline is among the vaccinated."
