The target for 2050, to meet the European requirement of zero emissions, is to reach 61,861 MW. The work to be done is enormous and urgent. The starting point is deplorable. The phrase has caught on among environmental groups and individuals who have always demonstrated against nuclear power plants, coal, and oil, and who now, to avoid blatant contradiction, are shifting their stance and introducing an adversarial nuance. What is it? What does this "but not like this" mean? It depends: it could mean "not in front of my window," or "not in this landscape that we have preserved for tourism or for the natural environment," or "if my town can't benefit from the electricity generated, then no."

We cannot continue consuming fossil fuels, or planet Earth will become uninhabitable for humans. Extreme weather events remind us of this with increasing frequency. We must accelerate the development of renewable energies: solar panels and wind turbines. How are things standing? Data: globally, between 2012 and 2022, the combined share of wind and solar power increased from 1% to 5% of total energy consumption. This is significant growth, but we are still far from replacing hydrocarbons. In fact, the increase in growing global demand has only been partially offset by the integration of immensely populated countries like China and India into the global economy. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, the consumption of coal, oil, and gas has continued to grow in the 21st century, including the current third decade.

It's proving very difficult, far too difficult, to catch up. Brussels' demands and our own commitments, approved by Parliament in 2017, are ambitious: by 2030, 50% of electricity demand should be covered by renewable energy, and by 2050, the goal is for clean energy to meet all demand. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has revised downward its forecasts for renewable electricity growth. This agency has cut its estimates for 2030 by 5% compared to the previous forecast. This modification is essentially related to the restrictive policies of the US administration, according to this organization's annual report. This lack of foresight and planning is also being felt now in the situation of 8,500 small Catalan investors in solar energy—62,000 in Spain—who have been abandoned by the same administration that pushed them to make the investment and that now compensates, for the same reasons, large international funds but leaves them to the same end.

And all that was missing was the recent major blackout. Catalonia consumes more electricity than it generates. In 2024, electricity consumption in the Principality was 44.1 TWh, while production stood at 37.4 TWh, representing a deficit of 15.19%.

Inertia is the energy accumulated in a moving body—if the motion is linear, it is expressed as the mass multiplied by the velocity squared, and if it is rotating, it is expressed as the mass and its distance from the axis of rotation squared, multiplied by the angular velocity squared. Kinetic energy. This energy dissipates over time, but instantly tends to be maintained, whether the force opposing the rotation increases or decreases. In short, if a hydraulic turbine sees the force opposing its rotation increase or decrease, its speed will immediately decrease or increase very little, due to inertia. The same will occur with a combined-cycle gas turbine.

It delayed for many years the process of energy transition in the State, and this means that now we have to hurry to achieve minimum standards which in other countries have been the norm for some time. This is proved by the fact that since the repeal of the tax that penalised self-consumption, the number of new installations multiplied, as has the power installed, and not only by individuals but also by companies. At a time when the price of electricity is skyrocketing due to the type of tariff system in Spain – which penalises the consumer, since the energy produced in fossil fuel plants such as gas, which is more expensive and polluting, is the one that ends up setting the final price – the option of self-consumption, despite the initial investment, is gaining more and more followers.
