Sometimes I wonder if the councilors love the object of their department. Does the councilor of Education love education? Does the councilor of Linguistic Policy love language? Does the councilor of Culture love culture?Fifteen days ago, in an article in favor of teachers and professors, I spoke of the poison of superior causes. We must help these students!, said the pedagogues. But the function of teaching was not to help students, but to transmit knowledge. Twenty-five years of turning priorities upside down have destroyed teaching and have harmed students in a terrible way. We must go against the extreme right, we are told today, to justify any blunder. With criticism thus deactivated as in the case of teaching, both things will be achieved, the blunder and the extreme right, which already seem like two stages of the same evolution.

A small but essential imprint has been born: Eppur Llibres, founded by scientists Sergi Pérez and Jordi Barenys. This new publisher has a clear and noble objective: to offer some of the most important scientific texts in history in Catalan.

I'm taking advantage of Sant Jordi to pay tribute to the Catalan publishing houses that keep literature alive. It's they and their readers who raise the bar. If no one raises the bar, things will collapse, and the day these publishing houses fail—which isn't out of the question, given what's happened with education—little of us will remain. They are houses with reliable catalogs that remain outside the stacks of venal, award-winning, and promoted books that today fill the shelves of supermarkets and bookstores. These serious publishing houses would survive the disappearance of Sant Jordi—that much is out of the question—because they operate as far from big business as they do close to great books.

It is formed by Cap de Brot and Gata Maula, two young independent publishing houses founded this year with a similar purpose: to publish good books in Catalan and to do so and promote it from Girona. Nearby, heading towards La Rambla, Laia Regincós will be at the Ela Geminada stall. Despite being only thirty years old, she has been managing the business for six years. de facto This publishing house was founded in 2011, but this will be the first to do so as an owner. groupie She sat in the front row of the presentation of the two publishing houses. "For many years, I felt very alone," she says. Now, far from competing with each other, they are advocating for alliances and helping each other where necessary.

Sant Jordi is, in itself, an annual collective representation of how we would like to be: for a few hours we behave and portray ourselves as a cultured, civic, friendly society. This is what we want to experience again this year.
