The president of the steel company demonstrated to the National Court judge that the steel manufactured by Sidenor and exported to Israel "is not among the products subject to special control by the administration." Sidenor maintains that at the time of the sale "there were no restrictions on trade relations" with Israel and that, in any case, sales "were interrupted" in July. Finally, the Basque company argued that it "had not received any restrictions from Spanish or European authorities" regarding the sale of steel in Benjamin Netanyahu's country. In other words, the sale under scrutiny would not be one of the steel sales included on the list of dual-use goods. "Our actions have always been subject to the strictest legality," Jainaga reiterated.

The flotilla has reached the end of its journey without anything foreseeable happening so far. It goes without saying that for me, any action that contributes to raising public awareness of the terrible reality of the genocide that Israel is committing in Gaza is worthy of consideration. Genocides leave a profound mark on human history. The Spanish Prosecutor's Office will investigate Israel's "crimes" in Gaza, it announced this Thursday. However, this headline does not mean that Spain will directly pursue these alleged crimes, but rather will limit itself to gathering evidence to hand over to the international courts that already have open cases against the Hebrew state. The Spanish justice system, under current legislation, does not have the capacity to prosecute crimes of genocide or crimes against humanity committed in other countries by individuals not linked to Spain, as would be the case with Benjamin Netanyahu. In other words, the principle of universal jurisdiction does not apply in Spain. This means that any national court can prosecute the perpetrators of these types of human rights crimes—regardless of their nationality and even if they committed the crimes outside the country investigating them—to avoid impunity and the lack of protection for victims.

The Attorney General of Spain, Álvaro García Ortiz, has ordered the opening of an investigation in Spain into Israel's "crimes" in Gaza. According to SER (Spanish National News Service) and confirmed by the Prosecutor's Office, the investigation had been requested by Dolores Delgado, the Prosecutor for Human Rights and Democratic Memory, to determine whether the actions could constitute "serious violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, constituting crimes provided for in Articles 607 et seq." These include the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and crimes against persons and property protected in the event of armed conflict. Delgado, former Minister of Justice under Pedro Sánchez, requested the investigation after receiving a report from the National Police in June that included witnesses and evidence pointing to Israel committing actions contrary to international law in Gaza. She herself, along with the head of the Prosecutor's Office at the National Court, Jesús Alonso, will lead the proceedings, as decreed by the Attorney General. The conclusions of the investigation, similar to the one launched by the Spanish Prosecutor's Office to investigate Russian war crimes in Ukraine, will be submitted to the international bodies that already have open cases against Israel.

Israel escalates diplomatic conflict with Spain. After Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Pedro Sánchez of being "anti-Semitic" andhaving launched a "genocidal threat" against the Jewish stateTel Aviv called this Friday for a "boycott" of the next edition of the Mobile World Congress, to be held in March 2026 in Barcelona. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi ordered the cancellation of all preparations for Israel's participation in the fair. All of this, according to the newspaper Haaretz, in response to the Spanish government's "anti-Israeli" actions, its alleged "systematic support for Hamas" and "false accusations of genocide."

Pedro Sánchez is determined to play his cards right to counter the pressure he will receive from the courts in the coming months, aiming to ensure that government action overcomes the judicial ordeal. If last week's proposal was a state pact against the climate emergency, this Monday the Spanish president sought to take the initiative by announcing tougher measures against Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The decision to impose an immediate arms embargo and banning entry into Spain for all individuals linked to "genocide" and "extermination"—in Sánchez's words—has aggravated a diplomatic crisis between the two countries that has been going on for almost two years, since the war on Gaza intensified. Israel responded by banning two ministers, Yolanda Díaz and Sira Rego, from entering the country, and the Spanish Foreign Minister responded by recalling his ambassador in Tel Aviv for consultations.

The recent decision by the Israeli security cabinet to formally occupy Gaza City marks a new chapter in the genocide against the Palestinian people. It is not an improvised twist, but the formalization of a plan laid out from the beginning: to destroy, starve, occupy, disarm, and ultimately expel the population to realize the project of the so-called "Greater Israel." In 1948, the justification was also a war; the real objective was the Nakba: a plan of ethnic cleansing to guarantee Jewish majority and supremacy in the new State of Israel.

Pedro Sánchez has stood out, at the European level, as one of the most forceful leaders when it comes to condemning the genocide Israel is carrying out in Gaza and recognizing a future Palestinian state. The increasingly extreme facts are proving him right. Faced with this evidence, France and Germany have begun to change their position. But Sánchez's international political positioning in this area does not fully correspond with domestic events.

Or to decrease growth, which isn't even considered. That's why we live amidst contradictions and justifications, making greater or lesser efforts to maintain a certain coherence between thought and action. It's also true that there are those who strive for the maximum coherence within their means, and those who resolutely launch the ethics they claim the moment their wallet or their ego speaks to them. With the argument, of course, that the system is most effectively dynamited from within, something we've already seen isn't the case. The system, well thought out, can make people believe it has a voice, but it usually has the last word.
