The PP congress deepens Alejandro Fernández's loneliness: "He has been a victim of his own strategy."
Criticism of the Catalan PP leader's management continues, but his eventual replacement at the head of the party will not be discussed.
Alejandro Fernández had his moment of glory at the PP congress when it became known the amendment he presented to rule out any pact between the PP and Junts and the pro-independence partiesHowever, the negotiation with the state leadership ended with the leader of the Catalan Popular Party yielding to the proposal of Genoa, in which the pacts with the sovereignty movement were not explicitly vetoed, but were framed within "the defense of the State, the nation and the constitutional order"Fernández's amendment has already generated discontent among several members of the Catalan PP who, now that the congress is over, see their president's tactics failing. They point out that the "isolation" of the PP leader within the party continues. "It was an unnecessary conflict; it wasn't the time," notes another leader. The state leadership is not willing to start the melon of the postponed congress of the Catalan PP, because right now the party's strategy is subordinated to one thing: Feijóo becoming president of the Spanish government. Until this happens, the case of the Catalan PP will not be addressed, and Fernández is aware that the majority of the Catalan PP members are not aligned with him and do not view him favorably, just as they do not view him favorably within the state leadership. Furthermore, it has always been noted that this weekend's congress would not represent "any change" in terms of their internal position. Nor did many leaders who were asked to do so foresee this.
What could further deteriorate the relationship between Fernández and the state leadership is the entry of new faces from the Catalan People's Party (PP) into the state executive, who could be the link between the Catalan People's Party (PP) and Feijóo's leadership. This is the case of Daniel Sirera, leader of the PP in Barcelona City Council.although there are many critical voices within the party in the Principality–, and also the PP spokesperson in the Parliament, Juan Fernández, former right-hand man to Xavier Garcia Albiol – the mayor of Badalona was the person who presided over the PP congress this weekend. Specifically, Albiol and Juan Fernández, in interviews on TV3 and RTVE respectively, explicitly distanced themselves from Alejandro Fernández and defended the possibility of exploring pacts with Junts.
The other figure close to Feijóo who remains at the forefront is Dolors Montserrat, while the PP leader has also recruited the representative of the hardline wing of the party, Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo. The PP deputy wrote the prologue to Alejandro Fernández's recent controversial book. Therefore, some voices see in this movement an attempt to bring Feijóo closer to one of the voices most closely associated with the PP leader of Catalonia.
