The PP and Vox will ignore the Academy of the Language and will continue with the process to modify the name of Valencia
The Generalitat has the final say on the proposal for a secessionist double naming of the city
ValenciaThe mayoress of Valencia, María José Catalá, explained that, despite the ruling of the Valencian Language Academy (AVL) known on Saturday, which defends that the unique form with the open accent of the toponym of the city must be maintained, the consistory will move forward with the request to modify the denomination to include a bilingual version with Valencia in Castilian and a secessionist Valencian formula, Valéncia.
Catalá justified her decision by considering that the AVL's position "is very far from the Valencian people and their way of speaking". "It is an absurd contradiction that it says how it should be written but recommends that it be pronounced with a closed e", she added.
Contrary to what the PP and Vox defend – key players in promoting the secessionist form –, the Academy has made it clear in a report approved by seventeen votes in favor and two against that the appropriate denomination from a historical and linguistic point of view is the traditional and unique form València.Furthermore, it detailed that if the consistory opts for the approval of a bilingual form in Valencian and Castilian – a possibility that the City Council does have –, "the appropriate solution is València/Valencia".
Now it will be the turn of the Generalitat, which will have the final say, given that the AVL's report is not binding. The modification in València follows the path initiated in Castelló de la Plana, which has also opted for the double denomination, but without imposing a secessionist formula.
