The People's Party praises Puigdemont's Italian enemy who blesses Dolors Montserrat
Montserrat praises Tajani and his role during the Process, and criticizes Sánchez, Isla, Puigdemont and the amnesty
BarcelonaPraise for the role against the Process, mutual praise, and praise from absolutely the entire Catalan PP leadership present. Catalan MEP and Secretary General of the European PP, Dolors Montserrat, hosted a breakfast briefing this Friday at the Palace in Barcelona, packed with PP officials—including leaders in Catalonia, MPs, and councilors—which was a resounding tribute to Antonio Tajani, the Italian enemy of the independence movement and the former leader of the political blessing in Montserrat. The current vice president of his country's Council of Ministers and right-hand man to the far-right prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, played a very significant role during the Process years as president of the European Parliament and as the top leader of the European PP (he is now vice president).
With the harsh tone against the independence movement and against presidents Pedro Sánchez and Salvador Illa on the part of Montserrat, Tajani has been heard at home, and has taken pride in the period of complicity in the European Parliament and in the conception "of his country, of Catalonia and of Spain, and also of Europe. "My friend and dear Dolors Montserrat. "We share the same mission," Tajani stated, praising her as a "strong leader" that the Principality needs. He also called for unity in the face of the "division" rampant in Europe, outside of which he said there is no way out. Montserrat reciprocated, pointing out that "Tajani loves Spain" and that it was he "who asked us to respect the rule of law in the face of the rise of populism," and also in the warning against "others from outside who want to impose a way of life on us." This criticism of the migration phenomenon raised the tone in line with the Popular Party leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Thus, he called Sánchez a "passive ally of the mafias that traffic people" along the Mediterranean routes.
Tajani was one of the most furiously anti-independence voices when he held a position of such responsibility as that of President of the European Parliament during the years of maximum tension. of the Process, from 2017 to 2019. He emerged as one of the public enemies of Carles Puigdemont's government with his constant influence on the state's domestic politics in favor of the PP's narrative, emphasizing that "no one" would support Catalan independence and that it would have "no international recognition." In addition to meeting with the pro-Spanish organization Catalan Civil Society in Brussels, he placed every possible obstacle in Puigdemont's path to recognizing his MEP status, emphasizing that his surrender depended solely on Spain. A far cry from the conciliatory David Sassoli.
A battery of criticism
For her part, immigration will be one of the topics discussed at two European PP summits to be held in Badalona on September 29 and in Barcelona on October 2 and 3, as announced by Montserrat. The latter, chaired by Feijóo and attended by conservative European presidents and prime ministers and opposition leaders, will address transatlantic and industrial relations, while the former will focus on municipal and regional relations, with representatives from these levels. As usual, the Catalan MEP criticized governments that "embrace populism and nationalism," which are "the poison of Europe," and criticized the amnesty, which "Europe believes is contrary to the rule of law," as well as the debt settlement. She also addressed the official status of Catalan in Europe, limiting herself to saying that Sánchez "has deceived" Puigdemont and that, in principle, European languages are official throughout the member states.
However, he has dealt against the socialists for Isla's visit to Puigdemont, which culminates an "anti-European drift": "It is a betrayal of the values we share as Catalans, Spaniards, and democrats. With his visit, he has decided to legitimize a fugitive who fractured Catalan society," he declared. He also had the opportunity to speak about Sánchez's "corruption" and called her a "pariah" of Europe, because "she is left out of all the important decisions." For his part, Tajani, beyond the praise in Montserrat, spoke of the challenges of peace in Gaza and Ukraine and of European "identity." Also present at the event were the president of the Ministry of Public Works, Josep Sánchez Llibre, and the former CiU politician and leader of the supermarket employers' association and the Aena airport subsidiary in Brazil, Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida.
