The CUP bets on Laure Vega as candidate for Barcelona

BarcelonaUnless there is any last-minute news, Laure Vega will be the CUP candidate in the next municipal elections in Barcelona, where the 'cupaires' aim to recover the representation they lost in the 2019 elections. The current member of Parliament has accepted the party's proposal to lead the list in the Catalan capital in 2027, as reported by El Periódico and Nació Digital and as confirmed by ARA. The expectation is that Vega will be ratified this Saturday.

The endorsement for Vega comes from both the CUP and Comunistes, the party with which the 'cupaires' agreed on a joint candidacy in Barcelona. The deadline for the membership to vote individually ends on Friday, but no surprises are expected. Vega would be ratified on Saturday and the candidate would be presented publicly the same day at a press conference at the Nau Bostik in Barcelona. The two organizations of the candidacy are also preparing a major event for October 17th to present the full list and the electoral project.

Vega, raised in Sant Boi de Llobregat but a resident of Barcelona, has become a visible face of the 'cupaires' in Parliament since the resignation of Laia Estrada –the head of the list for the Catalan elections, whom she had faced in primaries– in July 2025. A supporter of broad left-wing fronts and a representative of the reformist wing of the CUP, she has not closed the door to exploring agreements with the PSC, which has led her to clash with the sectors of the pro-independence left most in favor of confrontation.

Now she is the party's bet to turn the situation around in the Catalan capital, where in the last two elections, in 2023 and 2019, the CUP has not obtained representation in the City Council. Vega will be in charge of leading with a candidacy that will have "a broad, anti-capitalist, sovereignist, and pro-independence vision," as defined by the 'cupaires' and Comunistes when they announced their alliance.
