Sumar demands that Spain not organize the 2030 World Cup with Morocco

The massive entry into Ceuta has had consequences in the humanitarian, political, and judicial spheres. And now an eventual sporting consequence could be added. This is, at least, what Sumar, the minority partner of the Spanish government, is proposing, which this Wednesday registered a non-law proposal in Congress to request that Spain not share the organization of the 2030 Football World Cup with Morocco.

Sumar asks the Spanish government to comment on the management of the World Cup and to formally convey to FIFA, the RFEF, and the Portuguese executive "the need to carry out a specific review and evaluation of the current joint organization model" of the sporting event. The text presented to Congress highlights that the organization of an event of these characteristics mobilizes "public resources, commits state guarantees, conditions investments and infrastructure, and internationally projects the host countries".

Sumar considers that "effective and continuous respect for human rights, international legality, and the democratic principles that must govern the actions of public authorities" should be demanded from the organizing countries, and urges the government of Pedro Sánchez to "act coherently in accordance with the democratic principles and human rights" on which Spain's foreign policy is based.

At the same time, Sumar also argues that FIFA should promote a reform in the awarding procedures to incorporate clauses that take into account and guarantee respect for human rights by the host countries and that allow for the review or even withdrawal of the status of host country if any serious breach in terms of respect for human rights is detected.

Sumar's proposal to reconsider the 2030 World Cup is not the only one presented by a political party: it is added to that of Livre, the Portuguese green party, which has asked the Lisbon government and the football federation for Portugal to withdraw from the organization of the World Cup.
