ERC lashes out at those who rebelled in Barcelona: "They were trying to play politics against the national leadership"
The Republican leadership meets with Cruz Camacho this Tuesday to discuss the future of the federation.
BarcelonaThe battle within ERC Barcelona has reignited, and Friday saw another chapter unfold. Eight of the thirteen members of the federation's leadership resigned due to disagreements with its president, Cruz Camacho, with whom they had shared a candidacy. This rebellion opens a new crisis among the Barcelona Republicans, which should, in principle, be resolved at a new territorial congress. This Monday, ERC announced that the national leadership will meet with Camacho early Tuesday morning to discuss the federation's future. The Republican leadership will grant the Barcelona branch autonomy to decide on the next steps. However, the party's spokesperson, Isaac Albert, has not hesitated to criticize the resigning members, accusing them of "trying to play politics against the national leadership." "It doesn't make much sense," he added.
The resigning members accused Camacho of making unilateral decisions that, in some cases, contradicted previously reached agreements. Underlying this is the ongoing conflict between the critics, including Camacho, and Oriol Junqueras' leadership. In fact, the current president of the Barcelona federation... He won the primaries last April against all odds and by 14 votes prevailing over the candidate backed by the Junqueras-aligned leadership, Eva Baró. Despite the resignation of more than half the leadership, Isaac Albert has asserted that the party's executive committee in Barcelona "exists and operates clearly and effectively." "What happens in the region is decided in the region," Albert added. In this regard, at the meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning, Camacho will have to explain the federation's situation and the next steps. The party will then have to decide whether to convene a regional congress to elect a new leadership, as stipulated in the regulations when more than half of the leadership resigns. This should occur within a maximum of one month. If a congress is not convened, the national leadership will have to appoint an interim committee to manage the party in the city. Meanwhile, the Barcelona federation had begun the process of convening a congress on February 27th and 28th to choose a candidate for the upcoming municipal elections, in which Elisenda Alamany had already confirmed her intention to run.
