MadridThe Ministry of Housing announced this Monday that David Lucas, Secretary of State for Housing, has died at the age of 58. Lucas, who had also been the mayor of Móstoles, had put his public life on hold at the end of June to be treated for cancer, which he could not overcome. "The ministry deeply regrets the loss of an excellent colleague who dedicated his life to public service and the common good".

"David Lucas's commitment and work leave as a legacy the foundations of the right to housing as a fifth pillar of the welfare state," the ministry insisted in a message of condolence published on social media, from where it sent a message of affection to the family and friends of the until now secretary of state.

Born in Madrid in 1968 and a doctor of law from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Lucas was also an elected senator for Madrid in the XII legislature, although the bulk of his political career was developed at a municipal level in the municipalities of Getafe (1999-2007), Madrid (2007-2011) and Móstoles (2011-2018), according to the Efe agency.

"On behalf of the entire socialist family of Móstoles, we want to extend our condolences to his family. David was an intelligent man, a great politician, and a good person who managed to recover the government of Móstoles for the PSOE. He left a great mark on the socialism of our city," declared the current general secretary of the PSOE of Móstoles, Álex Martín.

Outside the political sphere, Lucas had been a professor of financial and tax law and history of law at the Universidad Carlos III, a professor of financial law and constitutional law at the University of Nebrija, and a professor of political science and public administration and management at the Complutense University.
