BarcelonaGabriel Rufián and Irene Montero defended on Thursday from Barcelona a left-wing front for the upcoming general elections. The Republican spokesperson in Madrid was faithful to his most direct and, in some cases, provocative style. Rufián filled the auditorium of the Pompeu Fabra University with slogans to support his strategy to combat the far-right. These are some of those that summarize his speech:

  • "If we do not unite, they will kill us separately".
  • "I'm tired of being right".
  • "I refuse to say 'You'll manage' to the Spanish left [...] I want a PSOE government subjected to the sovereignist left".
  • "The problem isn't the fascists, but the neutrals".
  • "We must not disrespect the voters of Vox and Aliança, not all of them are fascists".
  • "What are large macroeconomic data for if oil triggers an alarm in supermarkets?"
  • "I prefer to fill tiktoks than libraries".
  • "What is coming is not the usual, what is coming is enormous social suffering and Abascal as vice president".
  • "I ask my party to lead this. And if my position is at stake, I'm going home".
  • "We have one bullet left. If these people [PP and Vox] get in, they will do so for years to come".
  • "It doesn't make me any less Catalan or any less independentist" to say that I want to stop all this".

This Thursday's event was the second that Rufián has starred in with members of the state left. The first was in Madrid in February, alongside the spokesperson for Més Madrid, Emilio Delgado. The republican leader stated this Thursday that he would also like to share a stage in the future with the former leader of Compromís, who will probably be a candidate for mayor of Valencia, Mònica Oltra. His proposal, however, continues to lack ERC's endorsement. This was confirmed by the party's spokesperson, Isaac Albert, this Friday in a tweet. "Our priority is clear: Catalonia," he wrote in a post on X. From there, he also added that Esquerra will not "resolve" the disputes of the Spanish left.
