Aliança takes advantage of the AfD's victory in Saxony to puff out its chest and mocks the 1936 anti-fascist poster

BarcelonaWhile traditionalist left-wing and right-wing forces across Europe are "shocked" by the overwhelming victory of Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt, far-right parties are not hiding their joy. Also here at home. Aliança Catalana has shown its happiness for the triumph of the AfD candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, in this state of the former East Germany.

"From Aliança Catalana we congratulate the AfD for the magnificent results in the Saxony-Anhalt state elections. Germany is closing a decadent and dark political chapter and opening a door to hope. Another Germany and another Europe are possible, to guarantee the sovereignty of nations and a shared free, prosperous, secure, and Western future. Aliança and Catalonia will not miss this appointment with history!", the Islamophobic group tweeted from its foreign office account.

When a user responded to Aliança with "You shall not pass" using an image of the anti-fascist poster by Pere Català i Pic, made in 1936, during the Civil War, in which a Catalan espadrille is seen stepping on a Nazi swastika, Aliança's foreign office retorted: "We have already passed!" The party, however, ended up deleting the tweet a while later.

Far from making any self-criticism, Orriols attempted this Tuesday to deny that Aliança mocked the iconic poster. "No mockery has been made of this historic poster or of anti-fascism. We are mocking all those of you who do not know how to identify it and trivialize it for electoral reasons," she wrote on social media. Previously, the leader of Aliança Catalana had replied to the President of the Parliament, Josep Rull, who lamented the victory of the German far-right. "If it depended on dreamers like you, Europe wouldn't even wake up," tweeted the far-right leader. The President of the Parliament lamented the election results in the Germanic region and asserted that Europe had woken up "darker, less compassionate, and more sinister" this Monday. "History insists on repeating itself," wrote the Junts leader. "Your pro-immigration policies, apart from being dark and sinister, are suicidal," Orriols replied to him.

The secretary of programs and Aliança candidate in Barcelona also replied to Rull, defending the xenophobic theses of Alternative for Germany. "Europe wakes up the same as yesterday: fed up with politicians who remain silent in the face of the massive arrival of immigrants while carrying out energy policies that dismantle industry. The AfD represents those who say ENOUGH," wrote the Aliança ideologue on social media.

He was the only member of the leadership who made various tweets following the meeting at the European Parliament between the head of Aliança's International sector, Pau Nadal, and the MEP for Alternative for Germany, Siegbert Droese, in the month of September 2024. A party that brings together neo-Nazi sectors and with which the European far-right has broken ties following controversial statements by its candidate, Maximilian Krah, who said that not everyone who had been part of the Hitlerite SS were criminals.
