Matthew McConaughey rejected the offer to star in 'The last of us'
The actor explains that at that moment he prioritized writing and did not want to commit to such a long series
BarcelonaThe North American actor Matthew McConaughey turned down the lead role of Joel Miller in the HBO series "The last of us, the character that Pedro Pascal eventually played. During an interview on the podcast Happy sad confused, McConaughey explained that during that period he was away from acting and focused mainly on writing and taking on leadership roles off-screen. The performer says he preferred not to tie himself to a continuous television project, because beyond "}the first season of True detective, I wasn't very active. The actor has acknowledged that he seriously considered accepting the offer, but that, in the end, he decided against it due to the involvement the series required.
During the same conversation, McConaughey also reviewed his time as the king of romantic comedy in the 2000s, with titles like "My best friend's wedding (2011), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) and Wedding plans (2001). The actor has revealed which of these films continues to bring him the most economic benefits: "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is the gift that keeps on giving me money", he assured, and added that it is also his favorite romantic comedy of all those he has made. As he explained, it is the film that generates the most income in copyright royalties for him, ahead of any other film he has made, and by a large margin.
McConaughey also recalled that when revenue primarily came from DVD sales and cable television, he received a significant check every March due to the Valentine's Day surge. The actor attributed part of the film's sustained success to the fact that it is constantly broadcast on airplanes and is popular with younger audiences.
Break up with romantic comedy
The progressive distancing from the romantic genre is not new in the actor's discourse. In another recent interview on the podcast Good trouble, McConaughey already explained why he decided to break with romantic comedy just when he was at the height of his career. The actor said he was even offered 14.5 million dollars to return to the genre with a new film, but he rejected the money because he did not want to continue being typecast in this type of role. And he believes that, in Hollywood, this refusal was probably seen as his most rebellious move, as it sent a clear message about his determination to change his professional course. The decision ended up working in his favor, because it made the industry look at him with different eyes and opened the doors to more risky dramatic roles like the one in the series True detective and the film Dallas Buyers Club, with which he won the Oscar.
