BarcelonaTrans actress Hunter Schafer, popular for her role in the series Euphoria and ex-partner of Rosalía, has announced on the cover of Elle magazine that she has undergone gender reassignment surgery. This surgical intervention to modify the genitals serves to make the person's sex align with their felt gender. The actress, daughter of Presbyterian pastor parents, was assigned male at birth and was diagnosed with gender dysphoria when she was a minor. She transitioned during her adolescence, but did not undergo the operation until last December, at 27 years old. And she states that she is very satisfied with it: "It was incredible, and I love it," she says.
Since she was 19, Schafer has been a professional model for top brands such as Dior, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, and Vera Wang, work that she began to combine with acting. In Euphoria she played a trans girl, which has made her an icon for the LGBTQ+ community and has changed her status. The actress explained that for a decade she tried to live her identity in a more fluid way: "Ideologically, it gives you the possibility of expansion and growth, and to take the journey of finding yourself." And she adds: "I really wanted to try to make my body back then work, because it seemed to me that it had a cool and powerful point," she explained. But over the years, that "expansive" identity has become "flatter": "I am a woman, I am a girl." The actress explains "the tension" she has experienced between her queer identity and the way one lands in real life. It is at this moment that she reveals to the interviewer that she has undergone surgery.
The actress, who will premiere the series Blade Runner 2099 on Prime, in her first lead role, also talks about her partners, such as Rosalía and actor Dominic Fike. "I haven't had any relationship that has lasted more than two years. They say that after two years it becomes more of a kind of team rather than that passionate thing," she observes.
