The thief was arrested thanks to a relative of the Valencian architect, who was able to recover the watch.
BarcelonaValencian architect Santiago Calatrava was robbed while waiting for a taxi. The incident occurred at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when a man snatched a watch valued at around €100,000. It was on the Wooden Bridge, which crosses the Turia Gardens in Valencia. The robbery occurred while Calatrava was with his family, and one of the family members ran after the thief and managed to stop and detain him. At that moment, regional and local police officers arrived and arrested a 27-year-old man. A national police squad specializing in robberies is investigating the robbery.
Born in Benimàmet, Santiago Calatrava is one of the most internationally renowned Spanish architects. Throughout his career he has been distinguished with recognitions such as the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts (1999), the National Architecture Award (2005) and the Sant Jordi Cross (1994), awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya. His most emblematic creation is the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, but he is also the author of projects such as Turning Torso in Malmö, the World Trade Center station in New York and the Zubizuri Bridge in Bilbao. Despite his prestige, several of his buildings have been criticized by high costs, structural problems or expensive maintenance, to the point that some of his projects have been cited as paradigmatic examples of the less efficient side of monumental architecture.
