You with the genocides and I with the victims

The gravity of the crimes against humanity that Israel is committing in Gaza is beyond doubt, and after two years of death and destruction televised at all times, in the face of international passivity, no one can expect a democratic and moderately informed society not to react.

Now, faithful to the advice of "never waste a good crisis," the PP and the PSOE are milking their agitating role to such an exaggerated extent that for days now we have crossed the line of righteous indignation to enter the realm of Manichean electoral dynamics, with accusations of me being victims, or you with the terrorists and me with the Jews.

I am sure that readers have long since drawn their own conclusions about the massacre in Gaza and know that it is the result of a decades-long infernal spiral that has brought us here. Seeing the self-serving noise being made by the PSOE and the PP, especially the PSOE because it's in government, is frightening. Both are indulging in the polarization of Spain over the interposed issue of Israel and Palestine, with verbal violence that, rather than seeking to propose solutions, seeks to point the finger at the adversary's malice.

Both parties feel comfortable in this symbolic terrain because Spain has less influence internationally and its decisions don't have major consequences. But hearing about not mixing politics and sports, as the PP does, or cheering for human rights, as the PSOE does, after having remained silent when Spain had political clout and a reasonable weight in a short-term argument that doesn't stand up to the acid test of coherence.
