There is no doubt that the arrival of 2026 will be remembered for a long time as a period of worry and unrest. It goes without saying that in recent weeks we have experienced, both here and around the world, a series of events that have created significant difficulties: infrastructure damage, unexpected political clashes and actions, serious military incidents, unusual natural phenomena, public service strikes, and more. In this article, I don't want to discuss any of these, as they have already been sufficiently covered, but rather analyze a recent news story centered on the United States that I believe is very worrying for the future development of all humanity. It concerns the decision by the current US administration—that is, Mr. Trump—to eliminate the regulations established by the Obama administration regarding public policies on climate change. I believe this is one of Donald Trump's most serious and least understandable decisions, and one that deserves strong opposition from everyone.

1. Global warming and climate change.I have no doubt that the beginning of the 21st century marked, and continues to mark, the entry into a new stage in the history of humankind. This shift is primarily due to two factors. On the one hand, the availability of new digital technologies in the field of information generation and transmission. On the other hand, the planet's reaction to the difficulty of sustaining increases in the human population without a change in the consumption and growth patterns that were acceptable in the last century, but which are unsustainable with a population of eight or ten billion people consuming as we did until now, at the rate of three or four billion. Globalization, population growth, the explosion of data and information, and the need to maintain global coexistence compel all individuals and all governments, from large nations to smaller ones, to take measures to adapt to new lifestyles that will prevent a difficult future and avoid conflicts between countries and between people. Many of the things we have suffered in recent times confirm that we are on the wrong path, that we are not doing everything necessary, and that we are not doing it quickly enough.

2. Losers and winners. It is not surprising that the changes that need to be made, and which some are already beginning to implement, will have negative consequences for those who have enjoyed significant well-being until now, but that they could simultaneously allow for an increase in well-being for many more. If these changes are not made, the consequence will be a decrease in well-being for everyone, perhaps with the exception of a small number of the very wealthy. We are already seeing this in recent years with what we call the "disappearance of the middle class" and with the problems of discredit and mistrust that many governments around the world face in addressing these difficulties. To put it simply, we must accept that we as individuals must find ways to base our well-being on different elements than those we had in the last century, to find ways of living that do not push the planet beyond its limits, and that do not increase personal or territorial inequalities. Unless there is an increase in individual responsibility and clear action from governments recommending, and in many cases imposing, these policies, we will all be among the losers and humanity will not be able to live peacefully on planet Earth.

3. The policies of American governments.Last week's deregulatory decision by the Trump administration not only fails to combat global warming and prevent the problems of climate change, but it also undoes what little progress had been made by Democratic administrations. Trump had already withdrawn from the Paris Agreement twice. Now he is eliminating all US government regulations. This policy favors automakers and fossil fuel companies and masks the fact that it is detrimental to the health of all Americans, and indeed all of us. It is also linked to a desire to reduce the regulatory capacity of governments and allow markets to operate freely: he knows that, in any case, the financial and technological powers that were behind his electoral victories and are now in his government will be the ones regulating. It is no surprise that, in presenting the measure, Trump tried to justify it by repeatedly claiming that the climate crisis "is a lie and a hoax," thus discrediting all the scientific evidence that has supported it for years and all the personal experience we have all witnessed with the recent difficulties that have arisen and complicated our own lives. We are increasing our responsibility and denouncing this action by Trump.
