Trump: NATO, out yes
It is true that Europe has benefited greatly from having a large part of its defense outsourced to the budgets of the United States, but Trump could reserve the role of the offended for a better cause. Because for decades, US security has been defended from American bases spread throughout Europe. And because 65% of European defense equipment orders are placed with North American companies, and that amounts to billions that have entered the American coffers and come from European budgets for decades.
Hypocrisy, threat and confusion are synonyms of Trumpism: there are days when North America needs nothing from anyone, and there are days when he complains that allies do not provide the necessary help. There are days when the war in Iran is already won, and there are days when 50,000 soldiers are sent to the area. There are days when peace talks are going very well and days when they are not important at all. The same happens with the nuclear threat and the regime change in Iran. It was predictable that it would be the fault of the other NATO countries that Trump is bogged down in the type of war he had promised in his campaign would be over, that he has no exit strategy, and that he is driving up prices worldwide.
I imagine American generals putting their hands on their heads when they hear their president saying he will withdraw the United States from NATO and see him pincering Europe with Russia, because they are the first to know that one cannot go around the world without allies and that it is dangerous for 'America First' to end up being 'America Alone'. Trump has made another of his headlines, and we don't know if he's joking. With this recklessness he has for rewriting history without the remotest idea of what the next chapter should be.
