Donald Trump's war
Today we're talking about the Iran-Iraq War, but more and more countries are becoming involved, more civilians are falling victim, and more places on the world map have been marked by acts of war, making the conflict less regional and more global. And it's all likely to get worse, because Russia and China have, for the moment, remained in the declaration phase.
We could also call it Donald Trump's War, because it bears his unmistakable stamp: betrayal of his campaign promise to defend the walls with Mexico and not distant borders, contradictions with his administration about whether they intended to achieve regime change or not, contempt for what remains of international law (Bush goes to the UN), disregard for the US Congress, fallacies such as the claim that countries that don't cooperate are responsible for the deaths of American soldiers, the indecent use of the November elections to hide behind the flag, and a childish denial of the evidence behind Netanyahu. Nero burned Rome, but Trump is setting the world on fire, and the worst thing about these pyromaniacs is that they start the fires, wash their hands of it, and then blame you.
For Israel, the dictatorship of the Iranian ayatollahs was and is an existential threat, and this conditions any state, especially one founded on the historical persecution of the Jews. But knowing what the Middle East is like and how easily humans resort to war, one has to wonder to what extent the Israeli prime minister is sacrificing an entire country for his own political interests and to what extent no war will ever be enough to bring his country the peace he claims to seek.
