BarcelonaWhatsApp has announced a new update of its compatibility requirements on May 5th, the first since three years ago. The change will require users to upgrade their mobile phones if they want to continue using the instant messaging app. The phones affected by the company's standards update are all running on iOS, i.e., Apple's operating system.

Specifically, the use of WhatsApp will be limited to iOS 15.1 and later versions. This new update is a significant change because, until now, the messaging app operates with versions up to iOS 12, which is significantly earlier than the version that will go into effect on May 5th. Users who have the app on Android devices will not be required to update their software or change their device: WhatsApp will continue to operate on version 5.0 and later, as it has until now.

The models affected by the WhatsApp ban are the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, all released in 2013 and 2014. The change could go into effect on May 5th. Last September it was reported that another update would go into effect in February, but it will be less comprehensive than the May update and should only affect devices running version 14.1 of the operating system. So far, this last change has not taken place.

If you don't know the model of your device, you can check what version of the operating system your device is using. You need to follow these steps:

If you are an Android user:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to "About phone".
  • Tap "Android Version".

If you are an iPhone user:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Click on "General" and then on "Information."
  • Go to the "iOS Version" section.
