BarcelonaUnexpected plot twists are one of the best ways to keep viewers glued to a series, even if it often involves killing off some fan-favorite characters. One series that excelled at this technique was Game of Thunder, who had no problem wiping out some of its inhabitants, whether they were well-liked or not by its followers. Deaths that catch us off guard are a great dramatic device, and this year we had a notorious example that tops our list of traumatic disappearances. [Warning: spoilers for various series from this point onwards]

'The Last of Us' (Max)

Joel Miller

Pedro Pascal en el rol de Joel

Viewers who had played the video game on which it is based The Last of Us were already aware of it, but those who weren't have had the shock (and grief) of their lives. For many people, one of the series' great attractions is the participation of Pedro Pascal and the father-son relationship that develops between his character, Joel, and Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey. For this reason, many viewers were shocked when, in the second episode of the second season, which premiered a few months ago, Joel was cruelly murdered at the hands of Abby, a new main character in the series who seeks revenge on the protagonist. To add more drama to the moment, when Joel dies, he and Ellie are not going through a good time: their relationship is very tense and they practically don't speak to each other. Thus, the protagonist sees her father figure die without having been able to make peace. It must be said that Joel's death has been somewhat deceitful because it did not mean the complete disappearance of Pedro Pascal, since the actor has reappeared through flashbacks. But this week Pascal, who already knew the cruelty of television deaths thanks to Game of Thunder, he said goodbye to his character for good.

'Merlin' (TV3)

Merlin Bergeron

Many times series use death as a closing element. left viewers petrified when the legendary philosophy professor suffered a stroke in the final episode. from which he couldn't recover. The death occurred in the opening minutes of the episode, and therefore, the rest of the episode focused on what life was like for the other characters after the controversial mentor's disappearance. At the time, many viewers cried out online for the death to not be real and for it all to be a dream, but their prayers went unanswered. "From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to end like this: for there to be three seasons, for Merlí to die, and for there to be a time jump to seven years later," explained later the creator of the series, Héctor Lozano, in the ARA.

'Game of Thunder' (HBO Max)

Ned Stark

La decapitació de Ned Stark

Throughout the eight seasons that he had Game of Thunder There were dead to give and to sell But if there is a memorable one this is that of Ned Stark, the first clue that George RR Martin did not guarantee the survival of anyone in this universe halfway between the medieval world and the patriarch of the Starks was the supposed honest and just one that he exercised. Jeoffrey's evil arts made him confess to a crime he had not committed in the hope of being forgiven. Nothing could be further from the truth: in the ninth episode of the first season, Ned Stark is beheaded in front of his daughters Sansa and Arya and George RR Martin surprises the viewers by killing the one who seems destined.

'The Heart of the City' (TV3)

Laura Peris

Bea Segura a 'El cor de la ciutat'

'The Good Wife' (SkyShowtime)

Will Garner

Josh Charles en el paper de Will Garner

The Good Wife It was an excellent series about lawyers, but it also knew how to play like no one else with the sexual tension between the protagonist, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), and her former boss and lover, Will Garner. Often in series, the deaths of characters are given as a way out for actors who have expressed their desire to leave the production. This is what happened with The Good WifeAfter five seasons, Josh Charles, who played Will Garner, wanted to leave the show, and the creators granted his wish in the form of a particularly violent death: the lawyer was murdered by a client having a psychotic episode during a trial. Beyond the trauma it caused viewers, the death was beneficial to the show because it forced Alicia to confront her true feelings for the first time.

'Like it was yesterday' (3Cat)

Quim

L'escena de la mort del Quim

A case similar to that of The Good Wife was lived in As if it were yesterday, the current afternoon series on TV3. Jordi Rico, the actor who played Quim, wanted to leave the series, so the writers had to find a way to make the character disappear. The solution was an unexpected and also quite absurd death, in keeping with the character's personality: just after shaking off the superstition of walking under a ladder, Quim tumbles down some stairs and dies instantly. His wife, Cati, finds him lying lifeless at the bottom of the stairs.

'Grey's Anatomy'

Derek Shepherd

El Derek i la Meredith

One of the engines from the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy It was the love story between Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, which began in the series' pilot episode. The couple had their ups and downs, but their ending was tragic: in the eleventh season, the gorgeous doctor suffers a car accident while heading to Washington, D.C., to resign from a new job, forcing him to be away from Meredith and his children, who live on the other side of the country. The accident causes him serious injuries, and the protagonist ultimately decides to take him off the ventilator. The writers got rid of Shepherd after the actor who played him, Patrick Dempsey, had expressed his desire to leave a series he'd been tired of for some time. After the controversy surrounding the plot twist, Shonda Rhimes justified the character's death by claiming that it was the only way to get him out, because Derek would never have left his wife. Six seasons after his departure, Dempsey returned punctually to the series: Meredith, sick with Covid and near death, had a dream in which she was reunited with several long-lost loved ones, including her husband.

'Succession' (HBO Max)

Logan Roy

Logan Roy, el patriarca de la família protagonista

The death of the patriarch of Roy always hovered over the series, because, after all, the reason for the existence of Succession The challenge was always to find out who would be the businessman's heir. Logan Roy seemed invincible, and precisely for that reason, when the moment of truth arrived, many viewers didn't know what would happen. The billionaire died in the final season while on his private plane, plotting against his children, who had gathered for their eldest brother's wedding. Faced with the evidence that he surely won't survive, his son-in-law, Tom, calls Logan's children to inform them. The result is a harrowing and dramatic scene in which the children, with an intense love-hate relationship with their father, must say goodbye to their father. Logan's death is not a superfluous moment; quite the opposite: from then on, Kendall, Shiv, and Roman realize that the succession is now a reality.

'House of Cards' (Netflix)

Zoe Barnes

Zoe Barnes, interpretada per Kate Mara

It is often said that those who play with fire end up getting burned, and Zoe Barnes, the journalist from House of Cards who tries to uncover Frank Underwood's misdeeds, is practically an arsonist. When Barnes and his colleagues begin investigating the death of Congressman Peter Russo, officially declared a suicide, Underwood loses his patience with the journalist. In a clandestine meeting meant to resolve their differences, the politician gets the journalist to delete a series of incriminating messages and, in a moment of distraction, pushes her onto the subway tracks. The girl crashes into a train that is just then entering the station.

'The Serranos'

Lucia Gomez

Los Serrano

The deaths that aren't there are another classic of television fiction. The Serrano It traumatized half of Spain by having Lucía, played by Belén Rueda, killed by a car, leaving Diego (Antonio Resines) a widower for the second time—he had also lost his first wife—and raising five children in total. It was, by far, one of the most dramatic episodes of a series characterized as a family-oriented series that prioritized humor over misfortune. Lucía died at the beginning of the sixth season, and the series continued for two more. Perhaps because of the void left by the character, the writers opted for an ending that proved extremely controversial. Diego, overwhelmed by family difficulties, is ready to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge and dedicates a few words to his late wife. When he finally jumps, a white light appears. In this way, the viewer discovers that everything that happened since the first episode of the series was not real but a dream. Diego wakes up to find Lucia, whom he has just married, by his side, healthy and safe. In other words, the death never happened.
