BarcelonaOpen heart, Emergencies, Grey's Anatomy, Central Hospital, Doctor in Alaska, Doctor Martin…medical series are a genre of their own, well-established ones. Whether because viewers enjoy the heroic side of the profession or because they prefer the pool of doctors, they're a type of fiction that's constantly replenished with titles. Proof of this are the five new medical dramas that have been available on platforms for a few weeks now.

'Pulse'

Netflix

Una escena de 'Pulso'

Considering that Grey's Anatomy It's one of the longest-running (and most successful) series in the history of television. Who wouldn't want to be lucky enough to be its successor? Netflix has bought all the issues of the big one with Pulse, the medical drama that premiered this week, which seems almost a photocopy of the series starring Ellen Pompeo. In this case, the star of the show is Danny Sims (Willa Fitzgerald), an impulsive doctor who, unexpectedly, is appointed chief resident of a Miami hospital, a position held by Dr. Xander Phillips, recently suspended after she reported him to human resources for sexual harassment. As if that were not enough, through different flashbacks It's clear that both doctors had a romantic relationship in the past that they hid from everyone. All these emotional and professional ups and downs take place while a dangerous hurricane approaches the city and the storm before it leaves hundreds injured. Netflix isn't fooling anyone when it classifies the in-house medical drama as a "soap opera-type series." Therefore, everyone is warned of what they will find when they approach Pulse: emotional problems and, from time to time, medical cases.

'The Pitt'

Max

Noah Wyle, protagonista de 'The Pitt'

While Pulseor it is the lightest representation of the medical series, The Pitt It is the option for those who are not afraid of open wounds and crises of all kinds. Max's fiction recovers the spirit ofEmergencies, And not only because its protagonist, Noah Wyle, was one of the stars of that series (he played the character of Dr. John Carter, for which he received five Emmy nominations). The Pitt wants to be realistic, without concessions to cheap sentimentality, and adrenaline-filled: in fact, each episode follows in real time one hour of the fifteen-hour shift carried out by Dr. Michael Robby Robinavitch (Wyle). The first season of 15 episodes—one per shift hour—focuses on a single day that begins at 7 a.m. and coincides with the first day of a new group of students and medical residents. Although the Emmy nominations are still months away, it's more than likely the series will win some.

'Doc'

Movistar Plus +

Molly Parker en el paper de l'Amy, una metgessa amb amnèsia parcial

Based on an Italian series of the same name, the American Doc It focuses on Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker), who at the beginning of the series suffers a car accident that causes partial amnesia and means she can't remember the last eight years of her life. When she wakes up from the operation, she discovers with shock that she is divorced from her husband, Dr. Michael Hamda, and that her relationship with her daughter, whom she remembers from when she was 9 years old, is practically nonexistent. This is not the only revelation that will be a setback for her: she will soon discover that at the hospital, where she works as head of internal medicine, no one can stand her due to her lack of empathy towards patients and colleagues. Beyond showing Amy's journey, the series also covers two medical cases per episode and the lives of the protagonist's colleagues. Viewers who want to check out the original Italian series will also find it on Movistar Plus+.

'Krank'

Apple TV+

Una escena de 'Krank'

One of the latest medical releases is the German Krank: Berlin on the edge, much darker, dirtier, and more tortured than the proposals coming out of the United States. The protagonist is Dr. Suzanna Parker, the new head of the emergency department at a Berlin hospital. The doctor has moved to the German capital after her life in Munich fell apart. Settled into her new position, she attempts to implement various reforms, but encounters resistance from an underpaid and overworked staff. Parker's counterpart is Dr. Ben Weber, immersed in a spiral of self-destruction. The series is written by former emergency physician Samuel Jefferson.

'Breathe'

Netflix

Un moment de la sèrie 'Respira' de Netflix.

In line with Pulse, Netflix released the Spanish version a few months ago Breathe, which follows the daily lives of a group of healthcare workers at a public hospital in Valencia, Joaquín Sorolla. Unlike what happens in American medical dramas, here the defense of public and universal healthcare becomes one of the main themes. Despite the good intentions of making a social claim, the series is closer to the scrubs.Grey's Anatomy than a serious drama about the working conditions of Spanish healthcare workers. The series, starring Blanca Suárez, Najwa Nimri, and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, has been renewed for a second season, which began filming in December.
