Puigdemont will only return to Catalonia if the State respects his immunity

BarcelonaAt the beginning of the month, the General Court of the European Union provisionally returned immunity to Carles Puigdemont, Clara Ponsatí and Toni Comín while the appeal against the European Parliament is being resolved. The former President of the Generalitat, however, says he will not return to Catalonia until the Spanish government guarantees that he will not be arrested when he crosses the border. Therefore, this Sunday at a press conference from Waterloo, Puigdemont has claimed that the Spanish state needed to "respect" his "immunity" as an MEP and give him the necessary guarantees that he can return "without any risk".

"What will guarantee a return to southern Catalonia is Spain's respect for the immunity that I enjoy", Puigdemont has remarked in statements collected by the Efe agency, recalling that the other MEPs Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí are in the same situation. For this reason, the former President has again urged the Spanish President, Pedro Sánchez, to clarify what he intends to do with these three cases: "I would like to ask Mr. Pedro Sánchez if he intends to respect European immunity, if he intends to behave as the President of a government of a member country of the European Union, respecting the rules of the game of the European Union, or will there continue to be a Spanish exception in relation to the rule of law?". Several Spanish government ministers, such as Justice Minister Juan Carlos Campo, have assured "respect" for the rule of law, but in the sense that if he steps on Spanish territory Puigdemont will most likely be arrested because the euro warrant against him is still in force.
