The story of the Pujol family, for years a symbol of power in Catalonia and later the epicenter of one of the most notorious scandals in Catalan politics, comes to theaters with Our Father, The first film to address the fall of the Pujol Ferrusola family. Directed by Manuel Huerga and written by Toni Soler, the film will be released in theaters on April 16th by Filmax. It tells the story of how the former president of the Generalitat (Catalan government) and his family dealt with the crisis surrounding the undeclared fortune in Andorran bank accounts.
The film Our Father, produced by Minoria Absoluta, Lastor Media, Vilaüt Films and Last Minute AIE, with the participation of 3Cat, has become one of the most anticipated projects on the Catalan audiovisual scene this year.
With a powerful staging and a first-class cast led by Josep Maria Pou in the role of Jordi Pujol, the film shows how the former president and his family manage the crisis caused by the public revelation of an undeclared fortune in Andorran bank accounts. He is joined by Carme Sansa (Marta Ferrusola), Pedro Arquillué, Eduardo Lloveras, David Selvas, Silvia Abril, Luis Soler, Alberto San Juan and Antonio Dechent, among others.
Our Father not only focuses on the financial scandal, but also delves into the intimate, political, and symbolic dimensions of a figure who for more than two decades represented the center of power in Catalonia. The title, Our Father, evokes both the religious charge and the penitential tone of a story marked by power, ambition and public downfall.
The official synopsis describes it as "A story of sin and penance, of fathers and sons, of power and abuse of power, in the shadow of one of the most important figures in the contemporary history of Catalonia." The film reflects the contrast between the legacy of a man who was key to the construction of Catalan self-government and the impact of his 2014 confession, in which he admitted to having hidden a family inheritance for decades.
The fall of a figure of Catalan nationalism
Jordi Pujol, president of the Generalitat of Catalonia between 1980 and 2003 and one of the most emblematic figures of Catalan political ideology, saw his public career marked by a scandal that shook Catalan and Spanish public opinion. In 2014, Pujol publicly admitted that he and his family had kept undeclared funds abroad, in Andorra, for decades, proceeding—according to his version—from an inheritance from his father, Florenci Pujol.
That confession opened the door to several judicial investigations that would uncover a much more complex network. Evidence pointed not only to tax evasion, but also to money laundering, influence peddling, and corruption. The spotlight quickly turned on the Pujol Ferrusola couple's children, especially Jordi Pujol Ferrusola, who was accused of managing multimillion-dollar funds through opaque companies and accounts in tax havens. The Pujol family, until then perceived by many as a beacon of honesty and public service, was now under investigation by the National Court.
Beyond the complaint, Our Father It focuses on the most human aspect of the fall: the inner drama of a deeply religious man, convinced he has served his country, who sees the legacy he has built over years shattered by an act he himself confesses. The film portrays the tension between the vocation for public service, morality, and the intimate contradiction of sin, guilt, and redemption.
