BarcelonaThe Met Gala had one of its finest nights this Monday. For the first time in several years, the guests seemed to understand the theme the gala was proposing to them. dress code And, consequently, the carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which hosts the festival, was filled with interesting proposals that did justice to this year's exhibition. This year, the objective was to vindicate the figure of the Black dandy and recognize the African-American contribution to the world of fashion, the common thread of the exhibition. Superfine: Tailoring black style, which traces the history of clothing made and worn by people of African descent and can be seen at the museum from May 10 to October 26. Guests attending the gala were required to dress according to the theme "Tailor-made for you" (Tailored for you) and many have fulfilled the request, making nods to menswear and tailoring.

Zendaya and Rosalía opt for white

One of the most frequently used colors at the gala was white, chosen by icons such as Zendaya and Rosalía. The American actress did not disappoint, and as always, she perfectly matched the theme of the gala (Not in vain does it have one of the best stylists of the moment, the "image architect" Law Roach). Zendaya appeared on the Met Gala red carpet in a masculine all-white suit jacket and a hat that covered half her face, a design by singer Pharrell Williams – one of the hosts of the gala – for Louis Vuitton. One of the most obvious stylistic references of the look Zendaya's are the suits worn by Bianca Jagger on several occasions in the 70s (the most famous being the one she wore to the Kenneth Jay Lane party in 1974).

Coincidentally, an unexpected comparison took place on the red carpet. Anna Sawai, actress of the series Shogun, has appeared with a look almost identical to Zendaya's, although in this case it was designed by Dior. The main difference between the two is that Zendaya's model is more fitted and the pants are more flared.

The other star who opted for white was the Catalan Rosalía, who had already hinted that this color would be her choice when she arrived at the Carlyle Hotel to get dressed. Before the gala, she wore a long white skirt paired with a graphic T-shirt with the slogan Protect me from what I want and football boots, at the party she was something more classic and sensual: a Balmain suit molded around her body that turned her into a kind of sculpture.

Madonna also wore a white, masculine style. The queen of pop chose a white silk tuxedo by Tom Ford and paired it with a cigar. It's a style no stranger to the singer, as she has worn it on various red carpets throughout her career.

Lupita Nyong'o has also followed Zendaya and Madonna's trend, opting for a masculine cut, although in her case in a deep sky blue. The suit jacket, complemented by a transparent cape and a hat boater, is by Chanel. In the group of reinterpretations of the men's suit or tuxedo we should also include pop stars such as Chappell Roan, Rihanna (who with her look highlighted a budding baby bump), Sabrina Carpenter, and Alicia Keys. But if there's one singer who consistently cracks the ratings for originality, it's Janelle Monáe, who appeared in a coat that gave the optical illusion of a deconstructed men's suit jacket.

Demi Moore, dressed in a tie

In full return to the front line thanks to The substanceDemi Moore also left no one indifferent at this Met Gala. The actress literally dressed in a tie, one of the essential elements of dandyism. The black suit with white stripes, which simulates the bow tie with a large bow surrounding Moore's face, is by Thom Browne.

Men who fulfill the Met Gala's mandate

Typically, fashion shows tend to put more of a spotlight on women than men, but this year, given the theme, men were expected to step up, and many did. Bad Bunny was one of the male stars of the night, appearing on the red carpet with a suitcase in tow, perhaps already preparing for the world tour he announced yesterday. The Puerto Rican singer wore a brown Prada suit. The hat is a tribute to Puerto Rico, as it reproduces the Puerto Rican turkey, the straw hat that the island's peasants usually wear.

Also fulfilling the request was one of the evening's hosts, actor Colman Domingo, traditionally among the best-dressed on any red carpet. The actor made an entrance to remember, adorned in a blue cape decorated with a spectacular silver collar. It's a tribute to André Leon Talley, the iconic fashion journalist who passed away in 2022, who wore a similar one to the 2011 Met Gala. Under the cape, Domingo wore a Valentino suit jacket.

Other men who have stood out at the Met gala have been Regé Jean Page (The Bridgertons), Walton Goggins (The White Lotus), Adrien Brody and Andrew Scott.

Triumphal entries

This year's theme also brought about grandiloquent designs and triumphant entrances. In this sense, one of the queens of the night was Diana Ross, who returned to the Met Gala 22 years after her last appearance at the fashion party. At 80 years old, she was one of the best dressed of the night and appeared on the Met steps wearing a spectacular white cape with a mile-long train almost six meters long, embroidered with the names of her six children and eight grandchildren.

Singer Shakira also played with volumes and trains, all in pink and dressed by Prabal Gurung. On the same team was actress Cynthia Erivo, who did not abandon the color black, characteristic of her character Elphaba in Wicked, a film that has made her famous all over the world.

Small disappointments

Although elegant, Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman would be on the side of minor disappointments for not having fully followed the theme of the evening, or at least not with enough imagination. Hathaway has opted for Carolina Herrera and its current creative director, Wes Gordon, who has made her a look Sober: a white shirt with voluminous sleeves and an open collar, and a floor-length pencil skirt with a side slit.

Kidman also went all out for sobriety: a black Balenciaga dress with bows at the hips and waist for a disruptive touch.
