PaternaMercadona continues to grow and if in 2023 it managed to break the barrier of one billion in profits, last year it went even further and achieved a record profit of 1,384 million, that is, 37% more. This was explained on Tuesday by the president of the company, Juan Roig, during the presentation of results that took place at the company's headquarters, located in Paterna, next to the city of Valencia.

In terms of sales, Mercadona invoiced 38,835 million, 9% more than in 2023, when the figure stood at 35,500 million. 37,057 million correspond to the business in Spain and 1,778 to that of Portugal. Thanks to these sales, the company will be able to reinvest 1,109 million while it will distribute 275 million in dividends.

With these figures, Juan Roig has not hesitated to describe 2024 as a "spectacular" year and has highlighted that one of the components that have been key to achieving this success has been the strength of the tourism sector. "Spain and Portugal live off tourism and we must take care of it because it is the first economic sector in the country," the businessman claimed.

During his appearance, the president of Mercadona also congratulated himself for having been able to increase the company's market share by 0.7 points, up to 28.2%. In addition, he boasted that the company already accounts for 2.1 percent of Spain's gross domestic product and 3.7 percent of state employment.

Juan Roig also highlighted that the company has grown by 6,000 workers, up to 110,000. Workers who in 2025 will earn 8.5% more, in addition to receiving, "in 95% of cases," according to the businessman, an extraordinary bonus of 6,000 gross euros. With this increase, the average salary of a company employee with four years' seniority this year will be 2,100 net euros per month. To increase remuneration, Mercadona has quite optimistic forecasts, given that the company expects sales to grow by 3.5% this year, to 40.1 billion euros, and generate a profit similar to that of 2024. Among the new features, it has also welcomed the fact that online sales are already generating profit: they have grown by 30% and currently represent 842 million in sales, 2% of turnover.

Roig avoids criticizing Mazón

During the question period, Juan Roig has assessed the management of the DANA carried out by the Generalitat and the State. The businessman avoided commenting on the actions of the emergency committee on October 29 and limited himself to saying that the cold snap was "a huge natural catastrophe" and that "nobody expected it."

He has been much more extensive when analyzing the actions in the following days. According to Roig, all the administrations failed. "It was very difficult, but for four days a million Spaniards felt helpless," he said. Deficiencies that the businessman believes still persist. "We have had neither agility in the response nor coordination," stressed the president of Mercadona, who complained that "there is no joint plan for the future and all we see are reproaches."

Also regarding the DANA, Roig has had a special memory for the loss of four "big businessmen" - Vicente Tarancón, from Luanvi; José Luis Marín, owner of the Mas Camarena schools; Miguel Burdeos, from the company that supplies the Bosque Verde and Deliplus brands; and the former general manager of the EDEM business school Antonio Noblejas -, friends of the president of Mercadona.

"Not a clue" about the future of the world economy

As usual, Juan Roig has also made some striking statements. This year he has done so by talking about the future of the world economy and the possible impact of the increase in tariffs and their impact on stock markets around the world. According to the president of Mercadona, this has "no meaning" bitch "I have a hard time with geopolitics and I don't understand the stock market. In other words, I don't know what the future of the world economy will be," he summed up.
