Catalonia, below the European average and above the Spanish average in electric cars
The share of electric vehicles in total vehicles was 0.71% in 2024.
BrusselsCatalonia comes out more or less well in the use of electric cars depending on who you compare. In the Principality it has more widespread than in the vast majority of the State and is only surpassed by the Community of Madrid. However, if you look above the Pyrenees, it is well below the average of countries like France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and the European Union average.
According to ARA calculations based on the absolute figures published this week by Eurostat (the European Commission's statistical institute), Catalonia is almost half a percentage point below the percentage of electric cars in the rest of the EU. While the percentage of electric vehicles in the Principality was 0.71% in 2024, in the European Union as a whole it is around 1.75%.
In the Occitanie region, which borders the Principality and includes Northern Catalonia, this percentage has already risen to 2.19%. In fact, no area of France is below 1.80%, and there are parts, such as Provence and Paris, that are just below 3%. The entire former western Germany is also around 3% or more, while eastern Germany averages above 1.5%.
High percentages are also recorded in regions of Denmark, where the rate exceeds 6%, and Iceland, where it rises to 11%. Similarly, the high rates in Norway, where some areas reach 20% or even 20%, and in Scandinavian countries in general, stand out. In contrast, there are regions in southern Europe where electric cars are almost nonexistent, such as Sicily and the Peloponnese, which remain at 0.2%.
In contrast, Catalonia is the region of Spain with the highest percentage of electric cars, surpassed only by the Community of Madrid, which registers a rate of 1.3%. In contrast, the autonomous community with the lowest rate is Extremadura, which remains at 0.15%, followed by Andalusia, which stands at 0.25%. In fact, the Spanish average is 0.5%.
