What would you do if your best friend got involved with your daughter?
Disney+ premieres the dramatic comedy 'Alice & Steve', about a friendship put in danger by an unexpected romantic relationship
BarcelonaRelationships between two people with a large age difference often become a topic of debate. If the two people in question are your best friend and your daughter, the dilemma about the suitability of the relationship becomes very real. This is what happens to the protagonist of Alice & Steve, the dramatic comedy that Disney+ premieres on Monday, June 8, and which focuses on a lifelong friendship that is almost mortally wounded when he gets involved with her 26-year-old daughter.
Alice, a fashion designer, and Steve, a celebrity hairdresser, are in their fifties and have been best friends for decades. In fact, in their youth they dated for a while. One night, after attending a friend's funeral, Steve will hook up with Izzy, Alice's daughter, who has just come out of a relationship. It's not just a one-time passionate night, but they will try to move forward with the relationship, a situation that will completely unbalance Alice. Despite the new couple's many attempts to build bridges, the protagonists will go from being best friends to arch-enemies.
The person in charge of bringing Alice to life is the actress Nicola Walker, one of the most seasoned presences on British television. Known for having starred in Unforgotten and The split, in Alice & Steve she plays a character who is not particularly likeable, as she employs all possible underhanded tactics to sabotage the relationship of her daughter and her friend, played by Jemaine Clement.
Character out of control
During the series' presentation, which took place a few days ago in London, Walker admitted that if she found herself in a situation similar to the character's, she would react the same way. "At some point, though, I wish someone would grab me, put me in a room, and tell me: 'You need to take a step back because she's 26 years old and this isn't about you, regardless of how you feel.' As a parent, it's really hard to keep your mouth shut," she explained in an interview with Digital Spy. The actress assures that the scenes she has most enjoyed filming have been those in which Alice is absolutely out of control because she says it's very unusual to see female characters reaching these extremes. "She doesn't care about being judged because all she cares about is her daughter, and in that sense, she only has one goal," she adds.
Alice & Steve, created by Sophie Goodhart (screenwriter of Sex education), premieres on Disney+ after passing through the Canneseries festival, where it was the most awarded series. In total, the production took home three awards: best series, the special acting award for the entire cast, and the students' award.
