Until when do we have to let Israel kill journalists?
BarcelonaLebanese activist Sarah Abdallah posted a chilling photomontage on X showing eight journalists making the victory sign. The text accompanying the image was very clear: "Israel has killed everyone in this photograph. Everyone. They were journalists. Targeted and intentionally murdered. For reporting from the front line."
The last case, that of journalist Amal Khalil, on April 22, was particularly cruel. She was attacked while working, along with the photographer who accompanied her. And afterwards, the ambulances that wanted to rescue them were also attacked. According to official counts, Israel has already killed 21 local journalists in Lebanon since the attacks of October 8, 2023. And let's remember that Gaza is the place where more journalists have died since World War II. No more, no less than 238.
There are, therefore, many reasons to believe that this is a deliberate policy by Israel. BBC journalist John Simpson speaks of journacide, that is, genocide of journalists – in Spanish we could translate it as infocide–. Armies do not like journalists doing their work, and therefore they are in danger everywhere, but it is outrageous that the international community does not take more decisive measures against a state that acts in this way and without hiding, with the systematic will to prevent what it is doing from being known. What else has to happen?
Looking at the photo, I can't help but think of my colleagues from the newspaper who have gone to conflict zones to report on the ground. Like Mónica Bernabé in Afghanistan, Francesc Millan in Ukraine, or Cristina Mas in Palestine. With their work, they make the world a little better. And not everyone can say that.
