'The Scene Sessions: Barcelona', a Catalan-style 'Tiny Desk'

BarcelonaThe Catalan capital is a fertile musical territory, embracing everything from Catalan folk melodies and flamenco to new Latin American influences. This mix fosters the emergence of new styles and artists. The Scene Sessions: BarcelonaThe series, which can already be seen on 3Cat, aims to showcase Barcelona's music scene with an intimate and personal touch, featuring collaborations with artists such as Rita Payés and the 2017 Eurovision winner, Salvador Sobral. The series, which may remind viewers of...famous program on US public radioTiny Desk ConcertsThe series consists of 15 episodes and features a total of 75 musicians.

The project is spearheaded by Tamar Guttmann, founder and director of CUE Collective, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving and fostering musical talent and building bridges between music and society. Each episode, ranging from 5 to 20 minutes in length, celebrates the depth and diversity of Barcelona's music scene. Guttmann, an entrepreneur born in Amsterdam, states on her website that her goal is "to amplify the voices and stories that need to be heard."

The first episode features singer and pianist Lucía Fumero and the renowned trombonist and jazz singer from Vilassar de Mar, Rita Payés, who perform various songs with, or even without, instruments. The group Alosa is renewing traditional Catalan music with the cello and tambourine, and Elipsis is coming together to create a global sound that fuses tradition and the future. Judit Neddermann will perform pieces such as I don't want to fall in love either Light in the sky And Tarquim brings Cuba to Barcelona with Afro-Cuban rhythms. You can also see and hear Jordi Rossy's Barcelona Co-op, Pau Figueres Trio, Alba Pujals Project, Lucas Delgado & Giuliano Eriston, Irene Reig & Bop Collective, Gramophone Allstars Big Band, and Marta Gómez performing with Antonio Mazzei. Hoss & DJ Swet present 1987A powerful, urban sound that blends hip-hop and electronic music. Salvador Sobral will sing If when you saw and Upon arrival with their unique vocal style. The final chapter focuses on the Casares Brothers and Horacio Romero, who will perform Ellington and MontgomeryThe episodes were recorded at the renowned and transformed Sol de Sants studio and directed by Jep Jorba of Poca Broma Produccions. Leo Aldrey handled sound design, mixing, and mastering. In addition to the performances, the artists showcase an object or idea that represents Barcelona's musical culture for them.
