The board game 'Catan' will inspire Netflix series and movies.
Platforms are looking for recognizable brands that can bring them new viewers.
BarcelonaNetflix has acquired the rights to the board game Catan to bring it to the audiovisual world. The streaming company and Asmodee will create films, series, and non-fiction formats based on the universe of this popular strategy game. The platform defines future content inspired by this brand as productions set "in a place where settlers must navigate multiple scenarios and manage limited resources and shifting alliances."
Klaus Teber, born in Rai-Breitenbach, Germany, created the famous board game in 1995. Since its release, more than 45 million copies have been sold in over 100 countries and it has been translated into 40 languages. Catanis an imaginary island with limited resources made up of 19 hexagons on a board. Whoever manages to colonize and conquer it is the winner of the game. According to the audiovisual agreement, the projects will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio, and Klaus Teber's sons, Guido and Benjamin.
Netflix's head of fiction series, Jinny Howe, has assured that anyone who has played the game knows that it offers infinite possibilities to create very interesting dramas. This is not the first time that Netflix has bet on making content based on real-life games: it has already done so with Family Pack, which adapts the well-known card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, a pastime popularly known as The Wolf. He also brought video games with a strong fan base to the audiovisual world. An example is Arcane, from the world of League of Legends.
This operation shows the next level of the "brand war." After having exhausted the video game catalog to create audiovisual content, with examples such as The Last of Us (HBO), Uncharted (Netflix) or Minecraft, now it's the turn of board games.
