The best drama series of 2025 wants to thrill viewers once again.

When it premiered in January 2025, it seemed like it was going to be just another medical drama, but as the episodes progressed, it became clear that the series transcended the boundaries of the genre. Word of mouth led to a growing audience, and social media was flooded with messages of admiration for its protagonist, Dr. Robby, the doctor everyone would want to treat them in a desperate situation. The HBO Max series is a realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by paramedics in the emergency department of a Pittsburgh hospital. One of the series' distinctive elements is that each episode corresponds to one hour of a shift on the same day, giving it a fast-paced rhythm. During the first season, a shift stretched to 15 hours due to a dramatic event was followed.

Characters that grow

According to the show's team, the plot of the second season picks up ten months after the end of the first. The new episodes are set amidst the chaos of the Fourth of July, the United States' national holiday. The trailer reveals that Dr. Robby returns to work after taking time off due to the mental health issues depicted in the first season.

"Part of the second season will focus on Dr. Robby acknowledging that he needs help, that he hasn't received the help he needs, and encouraging his colleagues to seek help to eliminate the stigma," explains R. Scott Gemmill, the show's creator. "Currently, one of the movements underway within the medical field is advocating for mandatory mental health screenings for healthcare workers. This way, if everyone is required to undergo screening, the stigma is eliminated. Doctors who have a problem or who stop working, for example, due to addiction, would still have a profession" and could return. Besides Dr. Robby, Dr. Langdon also returns to action, having been suspended in the first season due to a prescription drug abuse issue.

Noah Wyle, star and producer of the series, assures that the team doesn't feel pressured by the success of the first season. "Our job isn't to outdo ourselves. Our job is to do what we know how to do. So we think about what worked the first time and we do it again. We don't think about setting the bar higher. We shouldn't play by established rules. Although the cast remains almost entirely the same, there are a few minor changes. Shortly after the end of the first season, it was announced that Tracy Ifeachor, who played Dr. Collins, one of the main characters, was leaving the series. The production team has not offered any explanation for her departure, and rumors have grown that they decided to let the actress go because of her ties to an evangelical church with anti-LGBTQ+ stances that allegedly include conversion therapy.
