BarcelonaThe 26th Night of Magazines and Press in Catalan has claimed the role of publications in Catalan as spaces for reading, reflection, and quality information in an environment increasingly conditioned by algorithms and digital platforms. The gala, organized by the Association of Periodical Publications in Catalan (APPEC), was held yesterday at the Casino l'Aliança del Poblenou in Barcelona and brought together representatives from the editorial, journalistic, and cultural sectors. The president of the organization, Germà Capdevila, defended magazines as a "refuge against the algorithm" and warned of the growing influence of these tools on daily decisions, also on the way we consume information and culture. In this sense, he claimed the need to preserve spaces that allow for the discovery of content outside of automated recommendations. The event was attended by the Minister of Language Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila, who highlighted the sector's contribution to the vitality of the Catalan language.
Among the night's awards, the prize for the best publication went to the children's magazine El Tatano, linked to Edicions Cavall Fort, for its work in bringing reading closer to children and contributing to the creation of new readers. In the digital media category, La Lectora was awarded for its commitment to independent literary criticism that fosters reflection. In the best content section, the magazine Vallesos was recognized for the dossier Guerra i revolució de 1936, while in the digital category the award went to Filmtopia for the report De la interpretació a la creació: actrius/directores ahir i avui, by Daniela Urzola, on the role of women in the film industry. Regarding editorial design, the awards distinguished Rara, for its handcrafted and unique graphic proposal, and Cuina, in the digital category. The popular vote for the best cover awarded the magazine Horitzons for its spring-summer 2026 edition.
The APPEC board also granted three special recognitions. The Journalism Award went to El Punt Avui, coinciding with the fifty years of the publication. The jury highlighted its role in the recovery of daily press in Catalan after the Franco dictatorship. The Culture Award recognized Espai Texas for its contribution to the programming of cinema and theater in Catalan, while the Communication Award went to SOS Català, a linguistic outreach project on social networks that works to give visibility to dialectal diversity. The gala also served to recognize the trajectory of five publications: Top Girona, Cuina, La Corbella and Pedra Seca, for their twenty-five years, and the Valencian magazine Saó,which celebrates half a century of history. The ceremony, hosted by the writer Màrius Serra, once again focused on the diversity and continuity of the landscape of magazines and press in Catalan.
