15 Years of 'Modern Family': Where Are the Stars?
The comedy, which won 22 Emmy Awards, redefined the concept of family
BarcelonaOn August 21, 2010, many viewers in Spain discovered the chaotic dynamics of the extended family formed by the Pritchetts, the Dunphys, and the Tuckers. Modern family arrived in Spain as a comedy with a fresh and different approach. The series had debuted a year earlier in the United States, but soon captivated half the world. Over eleven seasons and 250 episodes, Modern family Not only did it triumph in audiences, but it also accumulated awards – it won 22 Emmys in total, five of them consecutively for best comedy – and, above all, popular esteem.
With a mockumentary format, it seemed like just another family comedy, but in reality the series wanted to go a little further: for the first time, a sitcom Aimed at a general audience, it featured a gay couple who were parents, a charismatic Colombian mother who was one of the pillars of an American family, and a conservative grandfather trying to understand the new world.
The evolution of the characters, and of the actors, made the audience feel like they were part of the family. It was a series that taught by naturally showing family diversity. Each episode revolved around a reflection, which between laughs raised deeper issues. The relationship between Mitchell and Cameron and the adoption of little Lily, for example, was presented with tenderness and humor, but also with normality. Without grand speeches, it helped normalize realities that until then had been underrepresented on American broadcast television.
