In a few days we enter autumn, although climate change has been altering the seasons for some time now. Since it looks like it will be sunny this weekend, we have prepared a selection of activities for you to do with your sons and daughters on September 18th, 19th, and 20th, such as taking a stroll through the Week of the Book in Catalan, enjoying the return of the Festa al Cel in Salou, watching birds at the Delta Birding Festival at Món Natura Delta, or awakening artistic creation at the Pluja d'Art Fair in Sant Jordi Desvalls.

Cultural and leisure activities

From September 18th to 27th, the Passeig Lluís Companys in Barcelona will be the stage for the largest festival of books and magazines in the Catalan language. With the start of the school year, family cinema premieres also arrive. This Friday, Mumbo Jumbo Gets Big hits the big screen, a story dedicated to the importance of believing in one's own strength and in each person's identity.

Mumbo is a hippopotamus who lives comfortably with his mother, but one day, by accident, he eats a mysterious mushroom that makes him grow and grow. He is so huge that he doesn't even fit in his house. Luckily, a mandrill named Frede finds the solution to the problem, but Mumbo will have to go all the way to Siberia to find it. Fortunately, his best friends, Tapir, Cheetah, and Mimbo Jimbo, accompany him on this adventure. A journey to become small in size again, but where he learns to grow up. Recommended for ages three and up.

After years of hiatus and a change of location, the oldest and most important air festival in the Spanish state returns. A true party for the little ones, who during the days of September 18, 19, and 20 will be able to enjoy aerial acrobatics, lights, pyrotechnics, and music so they can fall in love with airplanes.

A great opportunity to see the giants of the sky outside of airports, free of charge and visible from any of the beaches of Salou.

If you like watching birds at home, this weekend head over to the Delta Birding Festival, the only ornithological festival held in Catalonia. The Ebro Delta Natural Park is an ideal natural setting for this practice, and just now, at the end of September, it is the stage for the migration of many bird species.

In addition, there is a large fair dedicated to the world of ornithology. In the program of activities you will find guided tours, observation outings, art and nature photography exhibitions, film and documentary screenings, etc. There are also family activities such as bird ringing, boat trips, bird watching, nesting box workshops and much more.

This weekend, the streets of Sant Jordi Desvalls will experience an authentic shower of art. Painting, theatre, dance, music, circus... All kinds of artistic creation activities so that the little ones go out to the street and enjoy the municipality's cultural offering.

This Sunday, September 20th, Balaguer will become the great festival of the storybook and the illustrated book with a new edition of Encontats. During this week and until the big day, eleven publishing houses and two stationery shops will take to the streets of the capital of Noguera so that the little ones can discover and choose their next reading.

Fantastic stories will take over the streets and squares of the historic center, with a program that includes exhibitions, workshops, and shows designed to enjoy, listen to, and see some of the most beloved readings performed. Visitors will be able to listen to tales from yesterday and today while strolling through the town, participate in activities and workshops, experience the magic of the night of legends, and discover the latest novelties in children's and illustrated books. Encontats will also allow people to get to know the work of some of the best illustrators in the country up close and, above all, to be carried away by the fantasy that during these days will fill the streets of the center of Balaguer with stories.

If you want to take a trip to the past, visit the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia, located in Montjuïc. This month of September, a family activity is offered where you will discover that pollen can reveal what a landscape was like thousands of years ago.

Through observation, experimentation, and different challenges, you will learn to identify these small natural particles and learn how they are used to know which plants grew in a territory, what the climate was like, and how the environment influenced the lives of our ancestors. SAT! Sant Andreu Teatre opens its Remenuts series with Lumiero, by the company La Menuda Produccions. It is a poetic and evocative show that won the Best Stagecraft Award at FETEN 2026. Both young and old will be captivated by the live music, created with traditional instruments, contraptions, and musical toys, which bring the universe of Lumiero to life.

Lumiero is an endearing and dreamy character, an explorer of light and darkness who transmits his joy to everyone around him. Furthermore, on his journey, he is accompanied by his beloved daughter, Lumina. Together they will discover for us the magic of the twilight, a world where lights and shadows tell stories invisible to the naked eye. The ticket price is 10.50 euros, but check for all discounts.

You still have time until October to visit the corn maze at Granja Pifarré in Lleida. An activity that brings the Horta de Lleida and the work of local producers to all audiences. Throughout the route, you will have to overcome a series of agricultural, educational, and entertaining tests in equal parts, under the slogan "Flavors of the West". It is an ideal activity to do with family and friends. Furthermore, when you finish, you can have something to drink on their small terrace with products from Ponent and let the children play in the rural play area with a tractor circuit. The corn maze is open on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings in September and October. The ticket price is €10 for adults and €8 for children.

The family activities at La Pedrera - Casa Milà are a very good opportunity to visit this unique building in the city and at the same time learn more about its architecture. You already know that Gaudí was very inspired by nature. Therefore, in this activity, full of mystery, you will be able to find out which animals and plants are hidden between the walls of La Pedrera - Casa Milà.

Literary recommendations

From September 16th to 22nd, the European Mobility Week (EMW) is celebrated, and towns and cities fill their streets with activities under the motto "Mobility for everyone". The event advocates for universal access to public, sustainable, and quality transport regardless of income, location, gender, or abilities. That is why this new publication from the Catalan publisher EntreDos seemed ideal to us.

It is a board book with a wheel that little ones can turn to discover who is traveling in the different vehicles represented. Among the passengers, we find everything from a rabbit to a cherry, and even Santa Claus! An interactive proposal that invites children to learn about the world of transport, which ones we use every day or when we go on a trip, where they travel, and much more.

Food for thought

The WHO considers breast milk as the best nutrition for babies during the first six months of life, but breastfeeding cannot always be maintained as families would like. In this context, the Ministry of Health has taken a step forward with a draft royal decree that, for the first time, will regulate the promotion and advertising of infant formulas. The regulation will prohibit advertising formula milk for babies up to six months old and will limit the advertising of follow-on and growing-up milks. It will also prevent pediatricians and healthcare centers from accepting free samples, gifts, or sponsorships from brands, and also from handing out these products to families. The Ministry of Health argues that these practices can interfere with informed decisions and reduce the prevalence and duration of breastfeeding. It is a pity that the measure does not act on other needs related to breastfeeding such as pain, lack of support, social pressure, or maternity leave. If we are committed to breastfeeding during the first six months of life, we also need maternity leave for the same period and real reconciliation measures for families working in the private sector.
